Plymouth Rock Goes to Mintlock in Upset UpsetManages Manages to Last Long Enough For Nose Triumph Over Defense DefenseEAST EAST BOSTON Mass June 10 Charles Rufis Mintlock scored a surprise victory in the seventh running of the Plymouth Rock Handicap top attraction on the halfholi ¬ day card at Suffolk Downs today Hang ¬ ing on determinedly under Jimmy Brennan who was piloting his second winner of the afternoon Mintlock gained a nose verdict over Mrs H P Bonnets Defense who was half a length in front of Pine Tree Farms Valdina Alpha at the end of the sixfurlong sprint Only five of the original dozen named overnight accepted the issue with H Guy Bedwells favored and topweighted Sollure running fourth while Dr W I Lunts Valdina Punch was last lastIn In accounting for the Plymouth Rock Mintlock shouldered but 106 pounds which impost was 20 less than that carried by Sollure The Rufi gelding raced the dis ¬ tance over the good track in 111 Vs Not too well regadred in the speculation by the crowd of 19746 Mintlock paid 1560 in the tote The Plymouth Rock marked Mint locks fourth winning effort of the year and added 3930 to his earnings earningsDeTense DeTense was first to show in front leav ¬ ing the stalls Mintlock however moved up resolutely during the initial quarter mile and took over the pacemaking task while Sollure raced second and Defense was a closeup and determined third That order was maintained until the field was well inside the stretch and Valdina Alpha then came along stoutly enough to offer stiff contention contentionIn In the drive to the wire Brennan worked hard on Mintlock and his mount held on gamely enough to withstand Defenses fine closing bid Sollure faltered near the finish and Valdina Alpha nipped the Bedwell star by threequarters of a length for minor honors Sollure and Valdina Punch were lapped on each other at the final marker fourth and fifth respectively and not badly beaten off
