Thirteen Contest Brandywine Today Bon Jour Is Topweighted Under 126; Harford# Megogo And Rounders Main Rivals STANTON. Del.. June 1.— The eighth! running of the Brandywine Handicap here | tomorrow will present a field of 13 sea- ; soned performers in what probably is the j best group of handicap runners gathered j for one race so far in the young eastern season. Racing secretary Edward J. Brennan was ! highly gratified by the turnout for this I ,500 mile and a sixteenth attraction, for the 13 overnight entries represent almost i 50 per cent of the original list of eligibles which totaled 28. Nine of the first 11 high weights in; Brennan s handicap accepted the issue, in- j eluding Charles Turners topweighted Bon Jour and an assignment of 126 pounds. Miss Ruth McClanaghans Harford at 123 and second high weight of the field i also is in the lineup. Mrs. E. D. Jacobs" Stymie, third on the list, did not come i down from New York for the race but the J acceptances included the following: Christiana Stables Megogo, 119; William , Helis Salto. 116; Rounders from the same1 stable, at 115; W. P. Wetheralls Lord Cal- j vert, 115: Crispin Oglebays Boy Knight.; 114; Bobanet Stables Alfios, 114; Fdgehill j Stables He Rolls, 114; Bobanets Gay Bit.: 113; Brookmeade Stables Dare Me, 111; John Manfusos Astral, 107, and S. Fein-bergs Ariel Flight, 106. Keen Contest Promised The Brandywine promises to be the keen-eat sort of a contest, for at least half of the entrants have displayed fine form in recent endeavors and even those who have , not yet started this season have sufficient ; class to be capable of taking down the first ■Viae if up to their best effort. Bon Jour, winner last season of the : Trenton and Bryan and OHara handicaps : in the United States and in the Jockey Club Cup at Woodbine, .has had one outing at Woodbine this season in which he was unplaced. The Canadian-owned horses holds the mile and a sixteenth record here of 1:4245 and is joint holder with Fire- , broom and Sir Alfred of the mark for a mile and 70 yards at 1:41%. Gay Bit scored in the Philadelphia Purse at Pimlico and Harford was victorious there in the Rowe Memorial, attesting the fitness of this pair, while Boy Knight is coming into the Brandywine fresh from a sparkling triumph in the Wilmington Handicap on Wednesday. A dangerous horse, in the estimation of many, i.s He Rolls, a much improved per- ; former last fall and successful in the New Years Handicap at Tropical Park just before the shutdown. Megogo. winner of the Pimlico Cup ; Handicap last fall and third to Gay Bit at Pimlico. is highly regarded as is Lord Calvert, second behind the Bobanet color-hearer in Maryland. Rounders gave evi- j dence of nearing peak form with his third la Saguaro in the Excelsior Handicap at Jamaicf. and Alfios was second to Quarter Moon in a sprint earlier in this meeting. The two lightweights. Astral and Ariel Flight, both have been in action and may prove troublesome under the arrangement of imposts. Last years Brandywine went to Max Marmorsteins Castleman, with Sea Mar- , riage second and Omission third. The time record for the stakes is 1:446 set by Tatterdemalion in 1938 under 114 pounds. With this strip at its best now, it is possible I that a new mark will be established when tomorrows fine field completes the eighth running.
