Max Ilirscn Max Hirsch Looking Ahead to 1949 May Have Had Five Winners if Lucky LuckyOn On Watch Tick On and Dit Unfortunate Trainer Says Had Assault Bold Venture VentureBELMONT BELMONT PARK Elmont L I N Y April 30 Max Hirsch who saddled Bold Venture and Assault in their winning Ken tucky Derby efforts is somewhat sorry that he had to miss this year with Better Self but failure for one of his threeyearolds to train up to such a race as the Derby or exper ¬ ience hard luck in the race itself is nothing new to him himYou You know said Hirsch with an ex ¬ ceptional break in luck L woum nave saaaiea live winners 01 u race not two On Watch Tick On and Dit all met with bad racing luck and had it been the other way trainers would be shooting at my record instead of me try ¬ ing to win another However after you win the first the big thrill is gone Sure jits a thrill to win the Derby they run one a year and as the years begin to mount up you dont have the same opportunities and that goes for most every trainer Derby horses are not passed around like adver ¬ tising posters postersOn On Watch in his year was bumped at the start and broke in a tangle He made up a lot of ground but the handicap was too much Tick On was hurt at the start and that eliminated him Take my word for it that fellow was a good horse and as far as Dit is concerned he was carried out and Gallahadion came through on the inside while Dit was third On Watch was also third in his year Tick On although he apparently recovered from his injuries was not at his top when he started in the Preakness and finished second to Burgoo King KingAs As long as they run a Derby and I be ¬ lieve I have a horse that fits in that picture I will always entertain the idea of shipping out Breeders today and many racing pa ¬ trons are under the impression that the Derby is the ultimate test of a horses class should he be fortunate enough to win it Thats a debatable question with me and one that I am not any too willing to argue about The Derby in recent years attracts the attention of the sports public injhe country but one can remember when the Derby was looked upon by Easterners as an overnight race More power to Whin for building it up and barring accidents I will be there next year and I hope for years to come
