Atkinson Twice Leading Rider Has Ridden in Two Derbies DerbiesCHURCHILL CHURCHILL DOWNS Louisville Ky April 30 Though he has twice led the national jockey standings Ted Atkinson has yet to experience the thrill of riding a winner of the Kentucky Derby Atkinson rode Vera S Braggs Cold Shower in Count Fleets Derby of 1943 and piloted Perfect Bahrain for Mrs Elizabeth Grahams Maine Chance Farm in 1946 when the stable was also represented by Lord Boswell and Knockdown a triplepronged combination which also included Eddie Arcaro on Lord Boswell and Bobby Permane aboard Knock ¬ down which started favorite at 11 io 10 10Last Last year the Greentree Stable jockeys services were sought for Maine Chances Jet Pilot who was ridden to victory by Erie Guerin As the Greentree establish ¬ ment had entertained hopes of having a starter in the race trainer John Gaver was unable to give a definite answer as to Atkin ¬ sons availability when first approached so Tom Smith who was training Jet Pilot began negotiations and Guerin was given the mount Riding one of the best races of his career Guerin landed the Derby triumph by a short head
