Milton Recalls Experience Of Starting 1910 Derby DerbyGarden Garden State Park Camden N J April 30 James F Milton former dean of starters and now one of the stewards serv ¬ ing here well remembers the afternoon of May 10 1910 when he was in the starters stand to send away the field of seven that contested that thirtysixth running of the Kentucky Derby DerbyStarting Starting in the old days was not what it is today As Milton explains We had had quite a bit of trouble with Donau you know he was a big rough horse Because of his temperament it was necessary to eliminate the walkup start So we sent the field away from a standing start However Donau was not too bad at the Derby post and the break came about a minute after the field lined up Donau won the race That was the only Derby I ever started
