Horses Arriving Daily For AkSarBen Meet MeetVeteran Veteran Members of Official Staff Hard at Work for Weeks WeeksOMAHA OMAHA Neb May 3 The Knights of AkSarBen noted Omaha civic organiza ¬ tion will begin its 32day 1948 race meet ing at its local course on West Center Street on Tuesday May 25 and the season will continue through Monday July 5 AkSar Ben a member track of the Thoroughbred Racing Associations of the United States has one of the finest mile tracks in tne na ¬ tion and it annually presents an excellent season of good sport sportRecently Recently the racing commission of Ak SarBen comprising chairman James P Lee George Brarideis and William B Mil lard Jr along with activities director J J Isaacson and presiding steward Richard A Leigh announced that the minimum purse during the impending meet would be 1000 a healthy increase over that of previous seasons With the announcement pertaining to the higher purse distribution Judge Leigh and general superintendent James ERonin were literally swamped with applications for stall space s sThoroughbreds Thoroughbreds from many of the more important southern racing centers already have arrived for the Omaha meeting and local track officials are making every effort to take care of as many more stables as is physically possible With the inaugural day less than one month away superintend ¬ ent Ronin believes that all available sta ¬ bling facilities at the local oval will be in use long before the initial program is staged stagedThere There is much interest in the thorougn bred sport in Omaha and surrounding ter ¬ ritory workwatchers being quite numer ¬ ous Many of the early morning visitors checked in from distant points autos bear ¬ ing license plates from Iowa Kansas Mis ¬ souri North Dakota South Dakota and of course Nebraska being much in evidence evidencein in the meantime at AkSarBenr judge Leigh is perusing license requests of jockeys trainers and others connected with the turf Racing secretary Raleigh Leigh is on hand and starter Noel Chilcutts crew be ¬ gan schooling sessions last week The three well known racing officials are veterans with the AkSarBen staff and they have served here since the resumption of the sport at the local course after World War H HOvernight Overnight handicaps features at AkSar Ben this year will be valued at 2500 and the first of these the AkrSarBeh Inaugural Handicap will highlight the opening day program The sixfurlong sprint for three yearolds and upward is expected to at iract a quick field and entries for the fix ¬ ture will close oh Saturday May 22 Handi capper Leigh will post weights for the In ¬ augural Handicau on Mondax May 24
