Commodore Lea Makes Show Of Juvenile Rivals at Downs Speedy Son of Bull Lea Has Six Lengths to Spare Over Slick Pigeon and Warsick WarsickCHURCHILL CHURCHILL DOWNS Louisville Ky May 7 S I Crews Commodore Lea a son of Bull Lea and O Play one of the best juvenile prospects to show at the Derby oval in several seasons toyed with five rivals here today in the Desert Light Purse Well ridden by Steve Brooks who completed a saddle double the Crew colt coasted to the finish of the five furlongs six lengths before Mrs Emil Denemarks Slick Pigeon second by a neck over Helen B Higdons Warsick third Commodore Lea shouldered 115 pounds and stepped the Desert Light route over the good track in 59 which time was the fractional part of a second slower than the course record Favored in speculation at 2 to 5 the quick son of Bull Lea was one of the more popular winners of the day dayCommodore Commodore Lea assumed a clear lead after leaving the backstretch and then drew clear to win with speed in reserve Slick Pigeon in tight quarters during the earlier stages of the dash closed gamely under urging but he was no match for the flying victor and was all but to take place honors from Warsick a forward factor until reach ¬ ing the last eighth mile Mrs C A Copes Bolo Mack flashed good early speed but failed to stay and was a weary fourth at the wire wireTrack Track Improves ImprovesCool Cool but clear weather prevailed in the Louisville area and a good crowd turned out for the sport which was fbrmful and interesting The brisk breeze and strong sun rays aided in drying out the track which was slow for the earlier events oh the card but it improved as the program pro ¬ gressed gressedConsiderable Considerable excitement attended the running of the third race which was won by John A Kinard Jrs Eternal Bomb the favorite During the post parade Tetra Breeze a rank sort pulled outrider Joe Moran from his pony and later broke loose to run off threeeighths of a mile After this mishap the start produced more rodeo tactics as Howard Wells Hook Up came out of the stall gate pitching and bucking to unseat jockey Mel Peterson For ¬ tunately the veteran rider was uninjured Tetra Breeze who had misbehaved so badly before the break made a fast pace for the first half mile of the sixfurlong sprint but gave way badly after entering the stretch Eternal Bomb then took command and scored by eight lengths under Jimmy Combests handling BertRam ran second and Disran came from far back to garner the short end of the purse Eternal Bomb paid 2tol straight and his running time was 1 12 over the slow strip stripFast Fast Tempo Scores in Seasonal Bow BowMaking Making her first start of the year Fast Tempo from the Scoggan Jones stable eas ¬ ily won the second event which matched 12 ordinary platers at six furlongs Taken to the front soon after the start by jockey Freddie A Smith the Jones mare estab ¬ lished a clear lead entering the stretch and then drew clear winning with something left leftSecond Second honors in the dash went to Mr and MrSi David Feldmans Pene the choice who was two lengths in advancepf Murray Hill Farms Becky Murray at the final marker Play Wise came from well back to be fourth fourthFast Fast Tempo stepped the threequarters in 113 and was second choice in the tote at 4tol 4tolAfton Afton Villa Farms Note ridden by Steve Brooks overcame interference and was much the best of the six twoyearolds meeting in the fivefurlong opener Nola forced very wide by Gay Madelyn came fast when straightened up in the stretch and was up to beat John Greeners Free Night by threequarters of a length margin while Mrs Reid Luginbuels early pacemaker Vin ita Toney lasted for third honors honorsNola Nola a daughter of Pictor and Loose Foot graduated after running the fiveeighths mile over the dull footing in 1 04 and she was an evenmoney favorite i
