JUDGES STAND y CHARLES HATTO LEXINGTON Ky May 7 My Request may haye another go at Citation in the Preakness at Pim ¬ lico and we learn from Ben F Whitaker who is his owner and breeder that he also is a candidate for the Belmont Stakes My Request is an admirable colt of the sort who keeps punching resolutely and he proved the Easts fore ¬ most threeyearold prospect before he went barnstorm ¬ ing about in the Triple Crown races His sire Re ¬ quested was a plucky little horse but we notice that the breeding pundits do not speak of his pedigree on the dams side There is nothing at all wrong with his family which is really quite good in fact but we are afraid that those who are sticklers for class in the dam must take umbrage from Sugapud I have read that Sugapud was a fast mare in training who unfortunately went wrong and had to be retired to the stud Whitaker says with an amused grim As a matter of fact she did not go wrong and she could not show my trainer any speed and he advised me to get rid of her I was fond of the mare and was reluctant to sell her so I sent her to Kentucky to be bred Thus it would seem that My Request must be put dowiuas an exception to the rule Perhaps those exporting pedigrees can explain him by saying that Sugapud proves that after all the family is stronger than the individual One of the nice things about breeding theories is that the expert can find a convenient blurb to suit almost any contingency with which he finds himself confronted Probably be kind to dumb animals would be more appropriate than any ¬ thing else in Sugapud s case caseA A A A AWhitaker Whitaker teHs us that he has a twoyearold brother to My Request in training on Long Island this spring This one is called Ourquest The only thing spectacular he has done up to now is to lose his exercise boy dash My Request Exception to Breeding Theory Whitaker on Plans for String and Stud Coaltown Absent From Chicago Features English Guineas Winner Has U S Blood back through the barns fall and slide for home on a pavement Luckily he is none the worse for this escapade except for the loss of a bit of hide and hair I think perhaps he will be slow to mature as Chief Barker was the Dallas sportsman says A colt that seems a better prospect just now is Prince Quest whq also is by Re ¬ quested and out of Teddys Queen Whitaker has a stud of six or eight mares at Charles Nuckols farm near here and he says I do not plan to increase the number of my mares very much Of course I shall breed Carolyn A and her sister possibly to a son of Sickle to reverse the cross which produced My Request Whitaker fancies that My Request is an improvement on his sire physically and he observes that most of the Requesteds are straighter behind than is their sire By the way Sugapud is not the first thoroughbred that Whitaker has turned out in clover Once he and Mrs Whitaker went racing to see Hiomar run The veteran had done well for the Texan and he told Mrs Whitaker If Hiomar wins this one I am going to retire him He has been a pensioner ever since A A A AIt It is rather curious that whereas Calumet has nom ¬ inated almost every other horse in the barn for almost all of the Chicago summer stakes the swift Coaltown hasnt a single engagement at Arlington and Washington Parks Final payments for the Classic and American Derby were made on May 1 Of course there are several late closing events for which lie may be named if it vmatters at the time We understand that Citation and Free America are in both the Classic and the American Derby Mayor Jimmy Jones has indicated that the formidable Wright string will make forays to Saratoga Springs and possibly New Jersey during the summer months Thus the stables name horses will not be running over one another as they were in the Washing ¬ ton Park Futurity although they may run over some other peoples horses The Lincoln Fields club has re ¬ leased its roster of stakes for the Lincoln atWashington meeting The traditional Crete Jotiet Peabody Memorial and Lincoln Fields Handicaps are among the events to be renewed renewedx x A A A ABlack Black Tarquin is not the only Epsom Derby candidate who has a pedigree the Jersey Actors might wish to avoid There is also the Frenchbred colt My Babu who gained much support when he won the recent 2000 Guineas My Babu is a son of Marcel Boussacs successful young stallion Djebel who traces to the American mare Frizette He is bred somewhat like the little French horse Adaris who now stands at Henry Knights historic Alma hurst over near Nicholasville Efforts have been made to buy Djebel but the price is said to have soared to 600 DOO which is perfectly absurd of course and is another way of saying that he is hot for sale saleA A A A ATurfiana Turfiana Acoma confirmed her Keeneland form in the Debutante here and we do not think you have heard the last of this squareset sister to Floodtown Walter Haight was much amused at Havre recently when a two horse field went to the post and a horseplayer remarked We have given them minus pools and now they are giving us minus fields Marse Tom Piatt bought his three yearold filly Hang Up as a weanling because she descends from his Mirthful Charley Fishers home ¬ grown Star Reward winner of the Clark is a prospect for LincolnatWashington events He sat down in the gate at New Orleans but trainer Jack Hodgins is a former starter and seems to haje reformed him
