F L E C T f O N S NEW YORK N Y May 7 The long Jamaica meeting ill come to a close a week from tomorrow and just two stake events remain on the roster They are the 15000 Rem ¬ sen for twoyearolds at five fur ¬ longs on Wednesday and then the 75000 Gallant Pox Handicap at a mile and threesixteenths next Saturday The Remsen closed with 159 nominations and included on that long list are some of the most expensive youngsters of the 1947 yearling sales The tops of this expensive list is Spotted Bull for whom the Jaclyn Stable paid 45000 This same stable has also named Blue Admiral a chest ¬ nut colt by War Admiral Bird of Blue which cost 30000 Mrs C C Tanner has named the filly Tannette who is by Bimelech out of Forever Yours and who brpught a top bid of 36000 The Brookmeade Stable of Mrs Dodge Sloan named no less than nine young ¬ sters for this race and among them are Whirl Along a Whirlaway colt who cost 27000 and also Rocky Heights a Piping Rock colt who also cost 27000 There is no assurance that all of these youngsters will answer the bugle but there seems every assurance that a large field will contest the issue in this early event that is a fore ¬ runner to the Fashion Juvenile and National Stallion which will be run at Belmont Park With 75000 added the Gallant Fox shapes up as a whale of a horse race In this column yesterday we said that Jimmy Jones the Calumet trainer planned to start either Armed or Fervent But now Jimmy tells us that he wll send Faultless to New York early next week The colt is entered with Fervent in the Dixie Handicap at Pimlico tomorrow Jimmy said Armed is training to my satisfaction but he has not come along quite as fast as we thought he would so I am going to have him skip this race and it may be that he will start at Belmont Park Faultless is in the Gallant Fox at 118 and at that weight he will have his job cut out for him as both Stymie and Talon are weighted at 126 while Cosmic Bomb and Phalanx are at 12 and Double Remsen May Attract Expensive Yearlings faultless Calumet Starter in Gallant Fox Seven Possible Starters in Preakness Many Improvements Seen at Belmont Park Jay at 124 There are quite a few horses on the Gallant Fox list that must be given consideration at the weights and just two of these are Gallorette who is assigned 117 and But Why Not at 115 Both of these members of the weaker sex are in tomorrows Firenze Handicap at Ja ¬ maica With Armed out of the race Stymie and Talon are almost certain starters and it would not surprise us if they attracted the largest throng of the New York season to date dateA A A A AAt At this writing there appears to be a good chance of the Preakness attracting more starters than the five who opposed Citation in the Derby Coaltown the fleet colt who ran second in that classic is an unexpected addi ¬ tion to the lineup but the Pimlico race now promises to draw Better Self Gasparilla My Request Escadru Mount Marcy Vulcans Forge and Piet who won the Ral Parr Stakes at Pimlico on Tuesday In this race the Bomar Stable colt defeated Bovard who won the Louisiana Derby and finished second to Citation in the Chesapeake Stakes It would not surprise us if both My Request and Escadru who opposed Citation in the Derby ran better in next Saturdays race In fact as Ed Christ ¬ mas the Brann trainer said Escadru did not run a bad race in the Derby he ust did not run at all The Brann colt is capable of doing much better than that It is hard to say how C V Whitneys Mount Marcy will fare against the Calumet colt Mount Marcy was very convincing when winning his last start and it could be that he will be the one to give Citation the hardest fight in the Prekness A A A AIt It was the original intention of Jimmy Jones to run Citationin the Withers which is scheduled for Satur ¬ day May 39 just two weeks before the Belmont Stakes fhird and last leg of the Triple Crown Apparently the stable has changed its plans not to race Coaltown against his stablemate in the longer events for three yearolds But it would not surprise us if on May 29 Jones sends Citation to Garden State Park for the run ¬ ning of the 50000 Jersey Stakes and have Coaltown start in the 25000 Withers which is at one mile The latter race would seem to be ideal for such a speedster as Coaltown and if he starts we doubt if he will be beaten Earlier in the year there was some doubt as to whether a Bull Lea colt would be able to negotiate the one and onehalf miles of the Belmont Stakes but after watching him in the Derby we have no doubt Citation will be just as formidable in this longest of the Triple Crown events Whirling Fox will not start in the Preak ¬ ness but the Belmont should be to his liking and he may be the horse to beat in the 100000 race on June 12 12A A A A ABelmdnt Belmdnt Park will open on Monday May 17 and although they have been restricted racing fans are cer ¬ tain to be surprised at the improvements they have in ¬ stituted this season In all there will be 21 stake events at the beautiful course before the meeting comes to a close on Monday June 14 with the running of the Rose ben Handicap The three most important races at the Elmont course will be the 50000 Suburban Handicap on May 31 the 50000 Coaching club American Oaks on June 2 and the 100000 Belmont Stakes on June 12 The finest horses in America will be seen in action in ¬ cluding the Calumet Stables name colorbearers who have played such a prominent part in this years racing to date Citation is a certainty in the Belmont Stakes and as we said above there is a possibility of Coaltown seeking the honors in the Withers which will be run on May 29 Armed is expected to be ready by the time this meeting is under way and will probably be seen in the 50000 Suburban Handicap which at one and onequar ¬ ter miles will be run on Monday May 31 Calumet has many twoyearolds that the Jones boys consider prom ¬ ising and some may be starters in the events which are reserved for that division
