JUDGES STAND CHARLES HATTON LEXINGTON Ky May 12 The feeling grows here in Scotland that we shall hear from Billings later in the season Robert W Mcllvain says that trainer Babe Wells will race him at Arlington and Washington during the summer season and he is eligible for the American Derby and Classic He is a long striding colt and the going in the Kentucky Derby was hardly in his favor the Chicagoan observes I was interested to know if he will go a mile and a quarter and I think now that he will He was playing about the stable the next morning Billings is a tall chestnut with a generous blaze and looks rather like an old print of his ancestor Hanover He is one Mahmoud who behaves as if he would not give a nickel to see an earthquake Billings may never gain top billing with Citation around but everyone remarks how well he has done He appears to have something left to train on the veteran Alex Gordon noted and it is a long season It may amuse you that his dam is by Sir Gallahad IH and his grandam by Fair Play although the blood of Teddy and Hastings isnt supposed to nick with that of Mahmoud By the way Teddy is the great grandsire also of Citation Coaltown Escadru and Better Self A A A AJohn John Hertz was showing us his Stoner Creek yearlings last spring when a particularly racy chestnut filly was wasJed Jed out This is the result of an experiment I made when Count Fleet was retired he said Count Fleet has that rgray blood of Roi Herode you see and this fillys dam Duchess Anita multiplies it through Anita Peabody and Grey Duchess What happened was that the filly grew up to be Our Fleet who captured Jamaicas Frizette last week and thus is the first Count Fleet to win a stake Last year Hertz experimented with accentuating the positive for gray blood along another line Hesent Duchess Anita to the gray Mahmoud Recently at Stoner Creek she foaled a filly that is decidedly of the undecided gray color colorA A A A ACalumet Calumet has been so extraordinarily successful that we expect the yearlings it has consigned to the Keeneland summer sales are bound to attract a good deal of atten ¬ tion If it interests you there are four colts and seven fillies and these are all of the yearlings Wright will sell in 48 The colts are a chestnut by Whirlaway Hastily Yours bay by Sun Again Lady Erne chestnut by Sun Again Miss Erene III and bay by Chance Play Potheen The fillies are a chestnut by Sun Again Lyric and bays by Blenheim II Blue Lily Whirlaway Lark Flower Blenheim II Light Lark Bull Lea Still Blue Ocean Wave Sunny Meadow and Whirlaway Thine Not long ago the KTBA voted Potheen the outstanding broodmare of 1947 and her colt is a brother to Pot o Luck and halfbrother to Bewitch Four of the fillies including the Bull Lea are out of Blue Larkspur mares The yearlings that Calumet will retain are to be taken up about July 1 to begin a long and remarkably thorough course of education The course includes van rides simulated races over the private farm track and freefor alls in the paddocks An occasional colt may come out of these scrimmages looking a bit like a hamburger to go but Paul Ebelhardt says this school of hard knocks makes them tough They do not scare easily and pull up if they are bumped in a race Mrs Otto C Neumann will introduce her racing colors this season Mrs Neumann was Barbara Shaffer is Dales sister and has bought a twoyearold filly called Bea Right This youngster is by Bimelech out of Black Lashes and was knocked down to Joel Farrell for 9600 at Keeneland last summer She ran rather vaguely ia three Miami races last winter but is said to be a promis ¬ ing sort and has been turned over to trainer H H Pete Battle Mrs Neumann has applied for cyclamen with French blue sleeves and these colors may in time become really conspicuous She already has the nucleus of a stud with the two mares Canicula and Alkit who are going to Hierocles and Adaris respectively this season seasonA A A A ATurf Turf ana Marse Tom Piatts teenage grandsons Tommy and Bobby Young now are thoroughbred breeders Their mare Black Daisy has foaled a sturdy Errard colt at Homewood Farm and they have booked her this year to Bushwhacker The Epsom Derby futures choice My Babu is inbred to Hanover through Frizette and the ancestress of Mahmoud NARC Prexy Cole may increase the membership of several of his committees Just for the records Citation passed both a saliva test and urinalysis after the Derby Do not be misled Coaltown was straighter than a yard of pump water in that one Duke McCue recalls that when he bought the dam of Valdina Myth for a fabulous British Honduras mahogany merchant who was his patron Brownell Combs made a characteristically sport ¬ ing gesture I will take what you have in that pocket for her Combs said indicating a trouser pocket Turn ¬ ing it wrongside out McCue produced four 10 bills The thoroughbred Ray has a halfbrother who is a lead pony
