Black Tarquin Beaten In Newmarket Stakes StakesNEWMARKET NEWMARKET England May 12 Reuters William Wooodwards Black Tarquin the American chal ¬ lenger for the Epsom Derby was beaten today by Sir Percy Loraines Riding Mill in the mile and a half Newmarket Stakes today Riding Mill was the only nonDerby candi ¬ date in the field of five Black Tar ¬ quin by Rhodes Scholar Vagrancy started at 8 to 15 Ridden by Willie Carr Black Tarquin challenged in the drive but could not gain in the run uphill and was beaten a length and a half Mrs M Buchanans Roaring Forties ridden by Gordon Richards was third another three lengths away All runners carried 126 pounds poundsCommenting Commenting on Black Tarquins defeat trainer Cecil BoydRochfort said I cannot understand it and I am sure his form is not right I had given him plenty of work He seemed well enough but I will take his tem ¬ perature tonight I had not planned on giving him another race before the Derby but now I may run him in the Lingfield Derby Trial on May 22 The Cobbler second favorite for the Derby will contest the same race
