BETWEEN RACES By OSCAR OTIS BALTIMORE Md May 17 Ci ¬ tation may not be a wonder horse but he will do until a better one comes along Perhaps no other horse of recent times has won his races with so much apparent power in re ¬ serve as the Calumet champion son of Bull Lea Hydroplane II As in the Derby he merely toyed vith his opponents in the Preakness Stakes and Arcaro really only let the colt run through the home lane Perhaps as Eddie Arcaro put it after the race no one will really know how good Citation is until he gets into the hands of the handi capper Arcaro flatly refuses to compare Citation with greats of other years he has ridden or heard about or looked up their DAILY RACING FORM chart performances It cant be done he says No one will know how good Citation is until the records all are in We know he is a great horse but just how great remains to be seen Ar ¬ caro indicated he was thrilled with the prospects of being able to ride Citation in future stakes engagements Dur ¬ ing the running of the Preakness Arcaro made good use of the knowledge he garnered in the Derby Trial at Louis ¬ ville when he experimented with the colt and discovered he could deliver a burst of speed at any stage of a race when asked Arcaro looked around after straightening out in the stretch in the Preakness lightly hit Citation just to keep the horse informed the race was still in progress even though the opponents were not within serious striking distance or if they were unable to sus ¬ tain their challenge The colt quickly drew out outA A A A ACitation Citation has some mannerisms vhich indicate he is as individual as your nextdoor neighbor En route to the paddock across the crowded infield one exurbant fan gave him a goodnatured pat on the rump and while he jumped it was only a minor incident and the horse passed it off quickly He shied momentarily when passing the band but soon settled down and paraded on the track as calmly as a cow pony He was not flustered or jumpy winners circle but did display one of his phobias if a horse may be deemed to have a phobia a dislike of flowers at least draped around his neck Flowers may be okay in the fields but Citation apparently wants no part of them as personal adornment Only after a kindly hand was placed over his left eye to momentarily blind him did he consent to the placing of the traditional wreath of blackeyed susans After it was there however he paid no further heed to the entire pro ¬ ceedings He then stolidly plodded1 out of the winners circle and over to his barn The Preakness was just another days work and not too hard a one at that A few columns ago the writer indicated he believed Cita ¬ tion would not waste too much time in attaining the 500000 goal As it is now he is sixth on the worlds moneywinning list If Doug Dodson rider of Vulcans Forge is correct in his estimate and many think it too mild that Citation is at least 10 pounds better than any other threeyearold in America then with ordinary rac ¬ ing luck or rather barring bad luck he could win far more than 500000 before snow flies in the fall fallA A A A ABeautiful Beautiful Hollywoocf Park opens its doors tomorrow for a spin of 50 days and is studded with a grand roster of stakes highlighted and climaxed by the traditional 100000 Hollywood Gold Cup This mile and a quarter race has taken its rightful place among the outstanding in the nation We rather imagine that because a 50000 handicap called the Sunset at a mile and five furlongs will follow the Gold Cup the setup will be most attrac ¬ tive to some eastern owners with more than one horse doting on a distance of ground Some big names un ¬ doubtedly will appear upon the roster of these two stakes and if the flight of Historian may be used as a precedent there is no reason why some of Jthese modernday horses should not fly out for such rich prizes Hollywood con ¬ tinues under the able management of the forwardthink ¬ ing Jack F Mackenzie who has surrounded himself with outstanding aides such as Wendell Cassidy as steward representing the racing association and now on a year round basis at Hollywood Mort Shaw manager of the parimutuels G R Buddy Wingfield as starter Johnny Maluvius as the racing secretary and Jack Beaman manager of the private turf club Add in some fine horses and riders put the show on in one of the beauty spots of all the world and it adds up that Holly ¬ wood can only continue to add to the prestige and build ¬ ing of California racing in particular and that of the nation in general generalA A A A Horses and People Jockey Lloyd Knapp is doing all right here in Maryland but it 36 his thoughts are turn ¬ ing toward eventual training and he is learning the trade under J W Mergler Knapp is an aptstudent of horses and railbirds predict he will waste little time making good when he does finally hang up his tack Knapp spent two years in the Army including 11 months tour of duty in occupied Japan As a young ¬ ster Jimmy Jones trainer of Citation galloped horses on the ancestral home at Pomona and shortly before school bell time would then hustle himself onto a pony and ride to school Jones had a brief riding career on the Missouri and nearby states fair circuit but weight ended any hopes he might have had of making the saddle a steady means of livelihood Riders who have ridden the Maryland Hunt Cup course near Glyndon and the Grand National course near Liverpool agree that in many respects the Glyndon course is the trickier and tougher Stuart Janney Jr Marylands racing commissioner has won the cup four times George Brown Jr the steward twice and Fred Colvvill steeplechase secretary once Glyndon is four miles plus over some 22 ob ¬ structions
