Bright Steel Along in Final Stride to Whip Johns Pride Reverses Finish of Previous Meeting in Detroit Event Pennock on Another Winner WinnerFAIR FAIR GROUNDS JDetroit Mich June 1 Bright Steel who races for Mrs George C White of Nashville was obviously in need of a conditioning race in his first appearance of the year when he finished second to J A Kinard Jrs Johns Pride in the Tonty Purse last Thursday Today the hardhitting son of Rolls Royce re ¬ versed the decision in the featured Kala mazoo Purse when he drove to a hard earned nose verdict over Johns Pride The racelong duel of this pair saw them two and a half lengths before Mrs K T Max ¬ wells fastfinishing Fleetridge who was third in the field of nine Bright Steel covered the six furlongs in 111 which was twofifths of a second slower than it took Johns Pride to whip him in the Tonty and he returned 12 12Johns Johns Pride had his usual early speed to take command soon after the start but Pat Milligan was at work on Bright Steel to have him next in line as Mayram was third This order of the leaders remained unchanged down the backstretch and around the turn with Johns Pride saving ground and Bright Steel under snug rating ratingOn On the final bend into the home lane Milligan asked Bright Steel for speed and he responded well to move around the out ¬ side to make his challenge Johns Pride had something left however and Combest called upon him to match the bid of the eventual winner Moving up gradually Bright Steel reduced the advantage of Johns Pride but it was only in the final stride that he was able to get his nose in front frontDislodges Dislodges Mayram From Show ShowFleetridge Fleetridge had trailed the field to the turn and here he was sent around the out ¬ side Closing with a bold burst of speed he swept up to dislodge Mayram from the final payoff berth in the final sixteenth Mayrams effort was a creditable one for her seasonal debut debutClear Clear and warm weather was the order of the day again and a crowd of 8388 was on hand for the sport sportNovice Novice rider Charles Pennock continued his successful bid for graduation from the novice class to apprenticeship when he pi ¬ loted Bosons Farms favored Bubble Gum to a frontrunning tally in the sixfurlong opener The lad from Camden N J has now won six of the nine novice races at the meeting Novices are automatically graduated with 10 victories Flying Freddie came from last place in a bold rush to fin ¬ ish second and Doctor L M took third honors honorsThe The second race saw eight maiden juve ¬ niles engaged and Pappys Rebel lasted to eke out a head verdict over the fastfinish ¬ ing Some Town as Ariel Bandit was third The latter had some excuse as did Some Town for during the stretch drive Pappys Rebel drifted out carrying Ariel Bandit along and when Some Town swept up quickly on the outside
