Dart By Merely Gallops Against Suffolk Rivals RivalsBrookmeade Brookmeade Homebred Asserts Vast Superiority in Feature FeatureSUFFOLK SUFFOLK DOWNS East Boston Mass June 1 Brookmeade Stables homebred colt Dart By a candidate for the weekend Yankee Handicap at this track merely scampered to his opposition in a nice pre ¬ paratory outing for that feature here this afternoon The bay son of Whirlaway Omaya by Sir Gallahad HE was three and a half lengths to the good of Swift Comet at the end of this mile event entitled the Cranberry and that margin was hardly in ¬ dicative of his superiority x xJockey Jockey Job Dean Jessop up from New York had the 3 to 10 favorite under a snug hold at all times and after finishing his mile in 139 Dart By worked put ten furlongs in 208 Swift Comet was just as clearly second best in the field of eight threeyearolds disputing the Cranberry the Cresson Farms colt winding up six lengths in front of Duke B BChilly Chilly dismal weather and a modest card encouraged only 10950 to visit the races this afternoon but this attendance that looked very sparse in comparison with the Tioliday throng on Monday was rewarded with consistent form throughout the after ¬ noon favorites accounting for five of the first half dozen events The track was fast but it was a little dead and had been har ¬ rowed very deep in at the rail Suffolk Downs experienced its first minus pool of the season the track having to delve into its pocket for over 4000 to effect a 220 show payoff on Dart By ByLeaving Leaving the gate in front of the stands Dart By lost no time in going to the front but Duke B anud Cresson Miss were right with the Brookmeade colt the three cir ¬ cling the first turn on practically even terms with Jessop allowing Dart By to travel a little wide On the backstretch Dart By under stout restraint held a slight advantage over Duke B and Cresson Miss the trio racing almost as one horse but it was apparent that Jessop could move away at will Cresson Miss was the first to retire and Swift Comet her stablemate who had been close up slipped through at the rail to take her place while Duke B although weary continued to lead the others now hopelessly out of the hunt Between the turns Dart By decided to put an end to the fooling and when Jes ¬ sop let out a wrap he quickly assumed a lead that was to prove decisive Rounding for home however Dart By went extreme ¬ ly wide and must have lost two or three lengths Zehr aboard Swift Comet did his best to take advantage of this opportunity but his mount was never equal to the task
