Belrate Finishes Strong To Capture Block Island IslandFurnishes Furnishes Surprise in Beating Camps First at Narragansett NarragansettNARRAGANSETT NARRAGANSETT PARK Pawtucket R L June 16 Belrate from the barn of R B Carroll finished stoutly on the inside to win the Block Island Purse at Narragan ¬ sett Park this afternoon before a crowd of 12658 a majority of which overlooked the Bel Aethel gelding causing a handsome re ¬ turn of 40 for the mile and onesixteenth jaunt Belrates margin was one length over the pacemaker Camps First owned by F Rando who had a like distance over R A Browns Tennessee Kid The latter lasted to take the minor award by a nose over W S Jacobs Jarvis Bay BayBelrate Belrate who was well regarded in his juvenile career won his first race of the year by taking the Block Island Jockey Charlie Mullins did a good job of rating the fouryearold and made every oppor ¬ tunity pay off Going down the back stretch about 10 lengths off the leader Mullins eased Belrate over to the inside while improving his position steadily and when the leaders came out slightly from the rail leaving the quarter pole Mullins really went to work and quickly sent his charge down behind Jarvis Bay who also was taking advantage of the opening openingJarvis Jarvis Bay loomed as the one most likely to catch the leader as iiiey passed the furlong pole but Mullins kept whipping Belrate and the gamester forged his way between Jarvis Bay and the rail to set out after Camps First The leader was having his troubles fighting off bids from Ten ¬ nessee Kid and San Justo Belrate reached the front about 70 yards from the wire and then showed his supremacy by continuing to increase the margin until he was a length clear clearThrough Through his victory today Belrate earned 2100 to add to 1250 for two thirds in previous attempts this year The time of 145 needed to score in the mile and a sixteenth was creditable and marks the Carroll representative as a candidate for the 10000 Governors Handicap to be run July 3
