JUDGES STAND By Charles Hatton Warren Wright on Status of Bewitch Chicago Turf Events Lure FrenchBreds Nelson Popular Arlington Apprentice Eternal War Begins Stud Duty in Ky KyArlingtons Arlingtons first midweek card will be notable for the seventh Princess Doreen Stakes a run of six furlongs for threeyearold fillies This affair may mark Bewitchs return to colors There was a rumor not long ago that 1947 s two yearold filly leader had run her last race but Warren Wright tells us that she is doing well and he added that We expect to start her soon perhaps in the Princess Doreen Bewitch is nowhere more popular than in Chicago wher she made five appearances and won five stakes last summer One often hears it doubted if she will stay but she certainly is capable of a soon six furlongs Mrs Dale Shaffers namesake Miss Mommy clearly outclassed Loujac at Washington not long ago in what appeared to be a nice work for the Princess Doreen She has grown considerably since hei twoyearold form as Shaffer has remarked and she is also more high spirited Duval Headley tells us that he has been pointing Charlton Clays filly Lea Lark for the Princess Doreen Her last race over East was something to send one home trying to analyze and explain he said here today I feel sure she is a better mare than that Adding to these prospects such as Harry Isaacs Itsabet and Fred Hoopers Silly Gyp one has all the elements of a firstrate filly stake stakeCalumet Calumet Dell Stables Brookfield H M Warner Cold stream and many others of Americas most prominent racing strings now are on the grounds at Arlington Park These will be joined before many days by Norman Churchs horses and by a shipment of French runners consigned to Reggie Cornell The Church string includes the 65000 Speculation who won the Will Rogers on the West Coast Prince Djordjadze is flying six horses mostly twoyearolds from France to Cornell and they may proceed by air from LaGuardia Field to Chicago We think that the French thoroughbreds in Cornells care will be active in Arlingtons turf course events By a co ¬ incidence Ben Lindheimcr was saying just now that Horses who come here from abroad often have to become accustomed to our courses before they can re ¬ produce their best form A recent case in point is that ol the filly Imprudence II IIArlington Arlington also will show some of Americas better riding talent Tony Push Em Plenty Skoronski was the leader back at LincolnatWashington and this 26yearold native of Chicago has a large following Steve Brooks also is active afc the North Side course where he is expected to handle Dixianas fleet Spy Song Max Hirsch has indicated that he will have some commuters for stakes at this meet and of course Warren Mehrtens will handle them Duval Headley has brought the veteran Mike Gonzalez here to ride the horses he runs for Charlton Clay Louis Lee Haggin II Lewis Tutt and other patrons N L Pierson will do most of the riding for the singu ¬ larly successful Calumet Farm although Eddie Arcaro will come on from New York to ride Citation in the Dick Welles and Classic Chicago sport seems to develop at least one worth ¬ while bug rider each season and H M Woolfs contract appren ¬ tice Eldon Nelson was considerably the most successful of the novices back at LincolnatWashington Woolf is much interested in developing new riders and Nelsons services now are in damand He is a 21yearold native of Glenrose Okla OklaEternal Eternal War who ran some sharp races for A T Simmons is an interesting addition to the ranks of Ken ¬ tucky sires R M Bob Young has the son of Eternal Bull and Red Haze at his Homewood Farm down near Lexington A recent arrival in the Blue Grass he has been bred to three mares near the close of the breeding season Eternal War must have been rather promising even as a foal for Doug Davis sold him to Simmons for 5000 when he was only six weeks old Among other things he won the Youthful and the Juvenile and in the latter race he became the only one of First Flights rivals that beat her as a twoyearold We think that Eternal War who now is a fouryearold is the first son of the proven sire Eternal Bull to be active at the stud By the way Homewood will offer two very smartlooking yearling fillies at Keeneland this summer One is a chestnut from the first crop by Ocean Wave out of Highland Cora The other is a chestnut by Peace Chance out of Coy Damsel The latter will be offered by the youthful Tommy and Bobby Young sons of the master of Homewood and grandsons of Tom Piatt PiattTurf Turf ana Mrs Danny Shea of the Merryland Farm in Mary ¬ land plans to attend the Doncaster sales in England Blue Jet is a candidate for the Lassie This is L J Tutts Blue Lark ¬ spur filly from Requesteds dam John H Clark returned to the Middle West from a flying visit to England and France with a high opinion of Nearco whom he describes as the most impressive stallion over there His daughter Masaka was easing up in winning the Oaks Nearco has an American cross and led Englands sires in 47 Cy White plans a lake vacation after the breeding season Page Boots dam Our Page once beat his sire Our Boots in a
