BETWEEN RACES By Oscar Ofs 1 1Train Train on Marble Footing at SuzyQ CastProof Stalls an Innovation To Film Sequel to Winners Circle Gwynn Wilson Vacationing in East EastHOLLYWOOD HOLLYWOOD Calif Inglewood Calif CalifJune June 22 One of the most intriguing as asects ects of visiting the various thorouehbr farms in California is the seemingly endless variety of climate scenery type of ac commodation for horses and methods of raising and breaking the youngster By way of explanation of the climate it might be said that California is made up almost en ¬ tirely of mountains ana vaueys witn the exception of a com ¬ paratively narrow coastal plateau Hence it is possible for a farm on one side of a mountain say inland to have an entirely different type of climate and soil than one just over the hill maybe not more than two miles away In any event the writer discovered something new over the week ¬ end at a visit to the 375acre elaborate SusyQ establishment of Thomas W Sim ¬ mons president of the Hollywood Turf Club SusyQ as a foundation offers flat and lush walnut shaded paddocks plus large areas stretching into wooded hills to the southwest providing rolling acreage to vary the level pastures pasturesA A A A AThere There are a few items about SusyQ that make it newsworthy in addition to what ¬ ever you have read or heard before The first is the fact that the halfmile train ¬ ing track has a foundation and top surface of marble Approximately 50 tons of mar ¬ ble dust was mixed with the natural soil foundation which contains a liberal per ¬ centage of adobe This dust was obtained from a nearby marble quarry and is just that fine dust Mixed with the adobe it provides a surface that absolutely does not cup renders the adobe impervious to water and in addition has conditioned the feet of the farm stock to an excellence that is outstanding One other feature is cast proof foaling stalls an idea developed by Simmons through long experimentation The castproof stalls are far more com ¬ modious than the average have walls slanting outward from the base at a fairly sharp angle Hence the roof area is far greater than that of the floor They have served to perfection at SusyQ to date SusyQ is fortunate in one other respect and that is that it is adjacent to one of Californias most famous spas Alvarado Hot Springs The various springs which dot the property and provide the water have not only an admirable mineral analysis but are the same as taken by people a few hundred yards down the line for arthritis and other ailments The horses given their choice invariably drink from the mineral water rather than any other offered offeredA A A A AHORSES HORSES AND PEOPLE Barbara Ann Roles sevenyearold daughter of owner and trainer Carl A Slim Roles is one of the stars of a forthcoming ice follies be ¬ ing staged later this month in Pasadena Bill Kyne did not carry any flood in ¬ surance on Portland Meadows Holly ¬ wood Park incidentally is insured for flood riot civil commotion lightning and earthquake The latter possibility poses the only real threat to racing here in theory as it never has been known to lightning here and a storm drainage sys ¬ tem installed by the track could safely carry away a deluge The track build ¬ ings are earthquake proof as much as such buildings be but as In the Long Beach earthquake racing was suspended for a time at Caliente some 130 miles distant be ¬ cause of road conditions The insurance covers even that contingency contingencyA A A A AIt It may be revealed that Richard K Poli mers turf production Winners Circle has been such an outstanding success in its Los Angeles showings that the man is readying a script and will begin shooting in October for a continuation picture taking the colt who was the star of Win ¬ ners Circle through his threeyearold form Scenes will be taken on the spot at Churchill Downs Belmont Park Santa Anita and Caliente The preliminary script indicates the picture will be in many ways more successful than the Winners Circle A spot check at Graumans Chinese Theater in Hollywood a cinema palace dedicated to first run super productions shows that the telephone calls asking for the starting time of Winners Circle are in the ratio of two to one asking for the starting times of the milliondollar feature production That a picture which is in fact documentary could create such an audience enthusiasm has been a source of pleasant amazement to the entire film industry industryA A A A AGwynn Gwynn Wilson vicepresident and gen ¬ eral manager of Santa Anita is vacationing in New York The powerful stable of Norman W Church leaves for Arlington Park before the close of the current sea ¬ son here George Brent plans to attend the Keeneland sales Lou Bronstein and his wife are in Chicago and are taking in the Arlington Park meeting The man is still buying horses
