ClassesArlingtons Arlingtons Equipoise Mile on Saturday is not at all a race against time Some of the trainers might even be a bit stuffy about it if a rider were to win off by unnecessary lengths in fast time But Ben Lindheimer is a stickler for a feathery racing surface and competition may force the winner to run a lively mile This was the case a year ago when With Pleasure had to hang out 135 which is the stake record in order to beat Armed To all indications Calumet will have a formi ¬ dable hand in the Equipoise again this week ¬ end Fervent and Faultless are among the prospects The race would mark Fervents first appearance at a Chicago course since the American Derby When last seen he recorded a new world mark of 200 for a threeyearold going a mile and a quarter One would think that Fred Hoopers imported Colosal is a natural miler for after all he had Faultless and Rippey behind him while he was finishing second to Stymie in the Metropolitan Nothing very much has been heard from Spy Song but he certainly fits such a race as the Equipoise Mile The weekends 30000 is a sort of preliminary to the 50000 Stars and Stripes of a mile and an eighth July 5th and the series is completed by the 50000 Arlington Handicap of a mile and a quarter on July 24th The Equipoise is in itself one of the most important mile events of the entire 1948 turf season seasonArlington Arlington has begun rather auspiciously and it would not be surprising if the daily average attendance were to approximate the 18039 of 1947 when the average play way 1112901 The North Side course is a little like the old Empire City geographically in that it draws upon a large residential area including many casual race goers who never attend other Chicago meets Lindheimer be ¬ lieves in putting on a good show and he says I like to think that we are going to offer some high class sport at this meeting Of course Citation which is often spelled minus poo1 is the performer having the most box office at the moment one of the most reliable agents of speed in The Blue Grass These are black colts out of Brogee by Broadside and Gray Porte by Porte Drapeau a bay filly out of County Meath by Bubbling Over and a chestnut filly out of Under the Guns by Man O War We have a notion that the talent scouts will like the Gray Porte colt particularly for he is a brother to the record breaker High Resolve The brown colt by Requested from Valvita by Jean Val Jean has the ear ¬ marks of one of the stars of the 48 Summer sales There is also a bay colt by Bimelech from Retaliator by Snark who is vaccinated to be a runner The young Simmons sire Eternal Bull who has out six twoyearold winners including two that have won stakes will be represented in the Chinn consignment by a bay filly out of Superlative by Pharamond II Another who is bred to have ample speed is the bay colt by Apache from Dou Douia by Wise Counsellor Rounding out the consignment is a chestnut Jean Val Jean colt out of Duchess Reigh by Reigh Count We think that Col Chinn was the first to offer yearlings who made fabulous sums in the sales rings in this country Nobody can guess with any degree of assurance how much an attractive yearling will fetch at auction but in our opinion this is one of the best consignments the Master of Old Hickory ever has offered offeredTwoyearold Twoyearold filly competition is going to take an in ¬ teresting turn before many days Chicagoans have heard many nice things about Flower Bed and Mystery Lady who came here as stakes winners Perhaps the Calumet Farms filly WhirlABit can entertain them She is said to be near a race Meanwhile the staff at Calumet is be ¬ ginning the training of 17 yearling colts and 10 fillies They were moved into the training barn last week to learn the feel of the bit and surcingle and soon will be line driven under the shed They are veterans when they come to the races Apart from these there are four colts and seven fillies to be offered at Keeneland Calu ¬ met plans a yearling show on July 14th 14thTurf Turf ana Be Faithful an old Chicago favorite is in foal to Heliopolis at Coldstream Aqueducts Dwyer of 50000 on July 5 is one major threeyearold event for which Citation is ineligible A good many of the 38 nominees are expected to console themselves in this mile and a quarter Frank Frankel may attend the Keeneland yearling sales next month His Flashco is currently on the shelf Pedigree pundit Jim Henderson contemplates a visit to Deauville Jaclyn Stable has thoroughly talent scouted the sales yearlings The French are seeking a Fair Play
