BETWEEN RACES I By Oscar Otis 1 1Cosmopolite Cosmopolite Ready for Lassie Favor Drumbeat in Westerner Charity Parlay Proves Lucky Evergreen Circuit Opens Today TodayHOLLYWOOD HOLLYWOOD PARK Inglewood Calif June 25 Running of the 25000 Holly ¬ wood Lassie Stakes here tomorrow will eive juvenile fillies their first chance this sum ¬ mer at important money and at the moment the race ap ¬ pears at the mercy of Norman W Churchs 47000 purchase from the Louis B Mayer sale Cosmopolite Cos ¬ mopolite is a daughter of the late Beau Pere and Hemisphere She was the highest priced filly in the sale and was the fourth most expensive of all the consignment Cosmopolite has started but once and in her maiden venture graduated quite impressively over Girlaway and Bren ton Light in allowance company Despite being carried wide on the turn she drew away from her field when called upon and raced the five furlongs in 100 and while not sensational was quite acceptable This is the fourth running of the Lassie pre ¬ vious winners having been Louis B Mayers Widows Peak Rex Ellsworths speedy U Time and Mrs John D Hertz Nursery School With the determination of the Lassie Hollywood decks will be cleared for some of its most important stakes The Westerner a 50000 mile and a quarter race for threeyearolds replacing the old Hollywood Derby is down for decision a week from tomorrow On the following Monday July 5 the historic 50000 Amer ¬ ican Handicap at a mile and one furlong will be presented A ANominations Nominations for the Westerner do not close until tomorrow night hence the prob ¬ able makeup of the field is a matter of conjecture It would not be at all surprising if the surprise winner of the Cinema Hand ¬ icap Drumbeat was installed as the pre race favorite He is one of the few three yearolds in active training in the West who have shown an inclination to travel this far Jt is fairly certain however that the Westerner field will be quite small Speaking of Drumbeat it is not a matter of import that the colt ran for 5000 in a claimer at Santa Anita last winter But it is news that the son of Domingo has been the subject of a rugged argument as to his intrinsic merit between owner Rob ¬ ert S Howard and trainer Jack T Engle Howard was so displeased with the lack ¬ luster of Drumbeat last winter that he sug ¬ gested Engle give him away The trainer refused citing many arguments why he thought the horse given time would turn out okay Howard refused to be convinced even after the horse ran third in the Santa Anita Derby and early in the season here again discounted his ability It was for this reason that Andrea Leeds his wife and her friend Mrs Howard Sherman of Bev ¬ erly Hills were able to buy him Mrs How ¬ ard had faith in Drumbeat from the start just because she liked the horse not through any past performances to sub ¬ stantiate her argument As for Bob How ¬ ard he is just as happy as anyone that the turn of events finally proved Drumbeat as worthwhile No one out this way least of all the owners and trainer Jack Engle has any illusions that Drumbeat is on a par with the notable threeyearolds of Chicago and Atlantic Seaboard racing But he seems far better than average in this territory territoryYou You may recall that not too long ago Mrs Howard Mrs Sherman Jack Engle May Sundae and Howard Sherman pooled 100 each to run an eighthorse show parley for charity The parley clicked and the sum won was used to buy a station i wagon for charity All received letters from the Daughters of Mary and Joseph the morning of the Cinema Handicap and the luck of Drumbeat was in part ascribed to those letters The letter to Engle reads in part as follows It is not often that a race horse provides funds for a convent station wagon and yet in our case that is what had happened because of the generosity of such charitable persons as you Our kind benefactress Mrs Howard has told us of your great goodness in answering her ap ¬ peal for a donation You can be sure that we will always have you and your inten ¬ tions in mind as we kneel before the tab ¬ ernacle and we can trust Him who is never outdone in generosity to reward you for your charity to us
