REFLECTIONS By Nelson Dunstan Credit 1948 With Remarkable Jockty Feats Arcaro on WeilEarned Miami Vacation ThreeYearOIds Still Hold Spotlight Juvenile Divisions Slow in Shaping ShapingNEW NEW YORK N YM June 25 25The The year 1948 has already produced two of the most remark ¬ able jockey feats in the history of the sport and both of them lire in connection with Derbys Just a month ago on Citation Eddie Arcaro became the only jockey to ride four winners of the Kentucky Derby Now the Australianborn Rae Johnstone has com ¬ pleted a feat never before accomplished in winning the English Drby on My Love the French Derby on Bey and now the Irish Derby on the Aga Khans colt Nathoo In this country and Canada last year there were no less than 11 Derbys run but on no occasion was Any one jockey able to account for two of them In recent years the feats of Gordon Richards have occupied most of papers but this year Johnstone has been given recognition comparable to that accorded Steve Donoghue The great Steve won six renewals of the Epsom Derby and three runnings of the Irish Derby but was never successful in winning the Prix du Jockey Club which is the French Derby None of the three horses ridden by Johnstone in this trio of Derby victories were favorites at post time timeFor For a week while in Kentucky we kept wondering what had happened to Eddie Arcaro as his name was among the missing of the jockeys at the New York tracks Upon returning to New York we discovered that many other people were wondering about the same thing so we phoned Ruth Arcaro Eddies wife and best booster and she said Why Nelson he is in Miami along with Bones and Irving Phillips to do a little fishing Since the Belmont he felt the need of a rest so he and his cronies went down to try their hand off the Miami cause ¬ way He was standing by however for at any moment he may have had a call to fly to Chicago to ride Citation He will be back on Tuesday or Wednesday and it could be that he will go to Chicago to ride Citation in the Skokie Handicap Arcaro is not accepting as many m ounls as he did in former years but he is certainly winning his share of those he does ride He has a very busy year ahead of him and unlike many jockeys of old he is wise in conserving himself for the big events which count the most Not many years ago the late George Woolf was considered the best money rider of the day but Arcaro has certainly filled the boots of the boy who rode Seabiscuit in the latters great race with War Ad ¬ miral and also in many other events eventsThreeyearold Threeyearold events are still playing a very definite part in the stakes schedules throughout the country At Delaware Park today they will stage the 17500 Leonard Richards Stakes while up in New England the feature event will be the 25000 Providence Stakes Those events by no means end the oppor ¬ tunities for the threeyearolds for on Wednesday of this coming week the 20000 Shevlin Handicap will be the feature event at Aqueduct and on the same day Monmouth Park will feature the 10000 Select Handicap July will be another im ¬ portant month for threeyearolds The 20000 Skokie Handi ¬ cap will usher in events for that division next Thursday and just two days later Hollywood Park will stake the 50000 West ¬ erner which was formerly run as the Hollywood Derby As July 4 falls on a Sunday this year it will be celebrated on Monday July 5 when the 50000 Dwyer will be the days at ¬ traction at Aqueduct and at Delaware Park they will feature the 17500 Delaware Oaks for threeyearold fillies The ac ¬ tivity in this division will hardly end there for these events are but forerunners of the Cleopatra Handicap Lamplighter Handi ¬ cap the Dick Welles Stakes Saranac Handicap and then the 60000 Arlington Classic which will be run at the Chicago track on July 31 31The The twoyearolds continue to progress slowly and this applies both to the colts and the fillies The filly Eternal Flag carried the silks of A T Simmons to vic ¬ tory in the Astoria Stakes last Wednesday and that owner will probably send Eternal World to the post in the 20000 Tremont which is for twoyearold colts and fillies and will be run at five and a half furlongs on July 7 This race closed with 115 nominations The stand ¬ out youngster of the division to date is Mr Busher the 50000 weanling who now gives all indications that he will prove a bargain for the Maine Chance Farm of Mrs Elizabeth Graham This younger brother to Busher has won both of his starts to date but in these events he won so impressively that he appears headed for the championship of his division even though that division has a long way to go The Tremont should prove a search ¬ ing race for the Maine Chance youngster for among those named are Wine List Ennobled Mirabeau Option and still others who appear above average A week later on July 14 the 20000 Great American will be run at Aque ¬ duct and here again is a race that has drawn practi ¬ cally every twoyearold with any pretention of class so far this season x There will certainly be no shortage of yearlings going to fhe sales rings this year In this paper yesterday it was an ¬ nounced that California breeders will open their vendues on July 19 with 126 youngsters scheduled to enter the ring The Keeneland Sales will open on July 26 and before they close tome 430 youngsters will have passed under the hammer of the breeders Sales Company auctioneers On Friday July 30 Tat tersalty another Kentucky selling organization will offer t croup of French yearlings who were brought to this country lust a i 0nth ago Then on the night of August 10 FasigTipton Company will open their two weeks of sales at Saratoga In jhe fall the Breeders Sales Company will offer a second group at Keeneland and later in the year Louis B Mayer will sell pis California crop at a place yet to be designated in the Golden fttate
