CONNORS CORNER By Chuck1 Connors BELMONT PARK Elmont L I N Y May 5 The Preakness at Pimlico and the Metropolitan here will vie for attention one week from this Satur ¬ day with the former no doubt getting the nod in popularity The Metropolitan is over the mile course and is fashioned for three year olds and over However for this years running it closed with 55 nominations of which three are three yearolds They are Coneo Kinsr owned bs Brookmeade Stable Of these three Pri ¬ mate looms the most formidable and at the moment has designs on offerings limited to his own age The Preakness on the other hand is the second bauble in the diadem known as the Triple Crown with the Belmont Stakes the last one The Metro ¬ politan is a speed test and was first con ¬ tested at Morris Park in 1891 Morris Park is but a memory to the veterans and on the old grounds is a branch storehouse of one of the better known packing houses from Chicago While in this vein today we have a couple divisions of the Swift Stakes and also at Saratoga the Wilson Maybe some day will get an Armour Hand ¬ icap to carry out the continuity continuityA A A A AWhile While the Preakness is the next big one for the threeyearolds the invaders to the Derby from this sector are streaming back nursing their wounds but vowing venge ¬ ance for the future What their Preakness classification will be is at the moment un ¬ decided Pimlico is an easy trip from here but a couple of hours by van over the new highways This weekend is the Withers and from a quick glance the returns from Louisville are more than likely to duck It is rather tough to ask a colt to drop back from a mile and onequarter to one mole They say a sign is hung on the barn which reads Quiet please horses cough ¬ ing Seventysix were named for the Withers and more than likely some of the less regarded ones will parade postward that is coughing permitted A release this morning stated that 400 horses at Belmont Park were victims of the cough and Mr and Mrs Walter M Jeffords deserted Maryland for the weekend and witnessed their starters in the Acorn J M Roeb ling from Trenton N J was on hand and reported that his twoyearolds are over the couching epidemic Ashley T Cole chairman of the state racing commission deplored the death of Benjamin F OShea of the Lester Manor Stable and one of Americas better known financiers Major Albert Warner of the film industry was an early arrival to say hello Bill Knapp re ¬ covered from a slight cold came out for the afternoon Bob Pinkerton of the noted detective agency was on hand early Harry Lamontagne well bundled against the chill winds reported that everything was okayC O Iselin was in his usual clubhouse spot for the weekend program Mr and Mrs Sam DiGiorgio of the fruit vegetable and steamship world forgot about the price of table commodities for the afternoon afternoonA A A A AHerbert Herbert Bayard Swope suffering from a touch of laryngitis spoke a few words but in a hoarse hushed whisper Lambert Goldswith the internationalist is high on the showing of the juvenile Countess Jane that Maje Odom has for the Larchmont Patron Leroy HetzelMrs Seth Morton was on hand to represent Saratoga for the big weekend Mr and Mrs John A Morris of Jamaica were among the early arrivals Sir Ashley T Sparks the steam ¬ ship man canceled his reservations at the last minute a touch of the flu The boys who fulfilled outoftown engagements over the weekend trooped in from Louisville and Pimlico Mr and Mrs Lawrence Brown of the book publishing set were on hand early Eddie Arcaro lost no time in swinging back into action following his ar ¬ rival He accepted a mount in the first race Eugene Constantin the Texan who has a pretentious stable in training here with Clyde Troutt is due in the near future for a lengthy stay
