REFLECTIONS fiy NELSON DUNSTAN BOSTON Mass June 6 Com ¬ missioners from the majority of states in which the sport is legalized are assembled in this historic city to attend the annual convention of the National Association of State Racing Commissioners The delegates will be in session until next Thursday morn ¬ ing with a busy schedule awaiting them each day On Wednesday they will take time out to attend a luncheon at Suffolk Downs and witness therun ning of the 50000 Massachusetts Handicap Two years ago the convention was held in Mexico City and last year in San Francisco While the National Association has no legal powers these conventions are of great value in that the commissioners exchange many ideas and take them back to their respective state for further consideration The majority of these men serve the sport without salary and this writer has always been impressed with the seri ¬ ousness with which they debate the various problems and listen to the addresses of invited representatives from different organizations at the open forums This will be the nineteenth annual conclave since the association was formed formedA A A A AThomas Thomas J Beeden chairman of the convention com ¬ mittee will deliver an address of welcome and introduce John B Hynes Mayor of Boston at the opening session Monday The response will be made by past president A S Drew of Louisiana There will also be an address by president D Thomas Testa and following that there will be reports by committees on uniform rules and procedure night racing international relations off track betting and state revenues On Tuesday and Wednesday mornings there will be open forums with speakers presenting their views and offering suggestions to the commissioners In this way delegates receive considerable information from Commissioners in Boston for Convention State Delegates Have Busy Days Ahead Massachusetts Handicap Run Wednesday Fillies and Mares Prep for New Castle Castleofficers officers or representatives of the many bodies in racing and breeding and also the racing press After these con ¬ ventions the secretarys office at Lexington Ky prints the addresses and the proceedings of the convention in a neat booklet for further study by the commisisoners In the evenings there will be dinners and dances given by the American Totalisator Company the Morning Tele ¬ graph and Daily Racing Form and the Massachusetts State Racing Commission and Massachusetts racing associations A A A AOn On Wednesday Suffolk Downs will attract a large throng for the Massachusetts Handicap at one and one quarter miles Many of the best handicap performers in the East including Tom Fool Royal Vale One Count and Intent were nominated for this race but at this writing the starting field is problematical Tom Fool is topweight at 130 pounds and as he would penalized three pounds for winning the Suburban he will skip it as will his lighter weighted stablemate One Hitter under 115 pounds This race was inaugurated in 1935 when Top Row was the winner over Whopper and Discovery Since then it has been won by Seabiscuit Menow Eight Thirty War Relic Whirlaway Market Wise First Fiddle Stymie Pavot and others Two years ago Greentree won with One Hitter and last year To Market was the winner with Tio Giro and One Hitter running second and third Seabiscuit and Whirlaway carried 130 pounds when winning their respective renewals Regardless of weights this fixture has usually been a fine contest This year the weights range from the 130 on Tom Fool down to 95 on Army Pal Larry Ellis a New England favorite is in with il3 pounds poundsA A A A AHere Here in New England as everywhere else there is much speculation on the outcome of the Belmont Stakes to be run next Saturday The same day the Kent for threeyearolds will be run at Delaware Park That does not end the activity for threeyearolds in the weeks to come On June 17 the Yankee is the feature here at Suffolk Downs and three days later Delaware Park will stage the 40000 Leonard Richards at one an oneeighth miles After the Belmont some of the threeyearolds will move to Chicago but many will remain here for the Leonard Richards Among those nominated are Jamie K Native Dancer Tahitian King Platan Real Brother Straight Face Isasmoothie and others On June 22 the Shevlin for threeyearolds will be the feature at Aqueduct There has never been a year offering so many lucrative purses for threeyearolds and when June passes from the calendar the 50000 Dwyer at Aqueduct will start the July schedule which also includes the 100000 Arlington Classis and other rich events It is a tough grind for those who can withstand the training regimen regimenWith With the Coaching Club American Oaks now in the record books owners and trainers of fillies and mares will turn their attention to the 25000 Top Flight at Belmont on June 17 and then the 100000 New Castle at Delaware Park on July 4 The latter race is at one and a quarter miles and is now the richest event for fillies and mares in this country The Top Flight is at a mile and a sixteenth We note that quite a number of the members of the fair sex are nominated for both The list includes Parading Lady How Emafdee Kiss Me Kate Grecian GrecianContinued Continued on Page FortyOne REFLECTIONS REFLECTIONSBy By NELSON DUNSTAN Continued from Page FortyFour FortyFourQueen Queen Marta and others There are some however who are not named for the Top Flight that will be possible starters in the New Castle One of these is Cerise Beine winner of the Delaware Oaks Another is Louis B Mayers Princess Lygia who re ¬ turned to the races last week Still another is Calumet Farms A Gleam but as she is still on the West Coast it is doubtful whether she will come east Last year Kiss Me Kate was the winner and it is within the realm of possibility that she will make it a consecutive double this season There are many good fillies and mares in the East this season and it is safe to say that the New Castle will attract the majority of them
