Boston Mass June 6 As equally exclusive as the Pad ¬ dock Club if not more so is the Casa de jos Amigos i wooden establishment hidden in a woody grove right near the sixfurlong chute This happens to be the ban ¬ quet room of the as ¬ sistant starters and what the place lacks in appointments is amply made up for lay the menu The fare pre ¬ pared by the starters who swing a cooking utensil with the same dexterity as they apply to a pair of tongs ranges from lobsters hams turkeys and clambakes to hot dogs Having had the honor to partake of their fare the other day I can vouch for their culinary ability abilityIn In the course of the repast the talk got around to some rough post actors and weird incidents that occurred at tracks from tune to time Ranking foremost in Dino Domolis mind is Vegas Red who cavorted at Ascot Park some years ago While the field was being loaded one day Vegas Red wheeled behind the gate leaping the fence and heading down along shedrow The jockey who had been hanging on all the while decided to bail out at this juncture rather than risk having his head smashed against a rafter and Vegas Red went on his mad dash alone finally winding up in the parking lot The outriders the redcoats of the race track were in hot pursuit and finally corralled him between a couple of autos and brought him back to the gate Vegas Reds adventure hardly dulled his speed and he went off and won the race Then he kept on going jumped the fence again and headed back for shedrow this time pulling up at his barn barnJack Jack Hennessey who along with Ed Pressy has been with starter Buddy Wing field for almost 30 years started off on Ragged Creek a horse that cost him some of his rainment which he made up for later This was in the days of the open stall gates and Ragged Creek could always be counted upon o be cantankerous After struggling with him one afternoon Jack finally solved the problem by taking off his sweater arid throwing it over the horses head It got the horse in the gate all right and he broke well but the sweater just disappeared and no amount of searching could recover it Jack got even though a couple of races later Ragged Creeks owner convinced that Bagged Creek would never break from 1 No amount of consolation on Jacks part could change the mans mind and a 10 bill was wagered by Jack that the horse would break from his post I won that one easy The horse broke from the inside post all right Only we didnt put him in the stall We put him between the rail and post 1 and let him go from there therePharosay Pharosay Calumet Farms horse was the nomination of Allie Bellew for his worse post actor A tremendously fast horse recalled Alfie but a devil at the gate In Chicago one time an assistant starter who was determined that no horse could best him decided to apply tongs and wrestle it out with Pharosay Which earned the starter a tossing over the fence tongs and all and a broken jaw jawAt At this juncture another chap who shall be nameless resurrected a story that Jim Milton had told him Back in the days of long ago when there was racing in South Carolina a meeting was in progress at which the racetrackers were hurting Even the food department was precarious A concerted rabbit hunt was held and after a number of them had been trapped a community stew was whipped for the rac ¬ ing gentry The boys lined up and pitched into the vat with a relish until one fellow digging way deep came up with a furry animal that was definitely a cat Which resulted in the presence of many sick per ¬ sons at that Carolina feast so relates our narrator and 40 years later the same tale broke up lunch in the Casa de Los Amigos AmigosWhile While we are on the subject of stories here is one an old time jumping rider around here tells Years ago he was par ¬ ticipating in a chase in which an Eng ¬ lishman was riding As they were hop ¬ ping over the hedges he heard the Eng ¬ lishman behind him yelling I say give me some spice space Give me some spice I have a pound wagered on this horse Whereupon our story teller ad ¬ vised him Stay there We have a ton bet on the one in front frontOne One of the many features of Massachu ¬ setts Day will be the usual guided tour through the stable area before the races Fans will be driven down to the barn area in buses and given a littleinsight on the other portion of the race track A fashion show to be held in cooperation with the R H White department store will be staged in front of the stands to help enliven the proceedings All this in addition to Tommy Collins sparring exhibition Owo has only recently been purchased by G B Wynhof f but already the gray filly has become the pet of Mrs Wynhof f There was an addi ¬ tion to the bird life in the infield when four baby swans were born yesterday morning which according to swanologists around here seems to be an extraordinary oc ¬ currence currenceHarry Harry Barnett has resigned as trainer of the Emerald Hill Stable
