By PETER COLE COLEF F Quartier Jr Buys 57 Acre Farm AnnDel Runners at Garden State High Sparkle Eyes Delaware Valley ValleyFREEHOLD FREEHOLD N J May 4 Frank Quar ¬ tier Jr who races a string with trainer A Pappalardo has bought a 57acre farm plans to move his Ann Del Farm breeding stock At his farm in Little Silver he has three broodmares three foals and the young stallion Gangland Bernbor ougfr Hard Baked by Hard Tack His Sun Again mave Miss Gretchen has a chest this spring and the roan mare Char Valenti Greek Warrior Blue Covert by John P Grier has a bay filly by the same sire The matronly 19 Moo Gallant Fox Bossie has a fine looking chestnut colt by Four Freedoms a full brother to Colonel and Mrs Tony DeAngelis yearling colt who boards at Mr and Mrs Charles V Dursos Circle D Ranch in Somerville SomervilleSeven Seven of AnnDel Farms thoroughbreds are now quartered at Garden State Park for the spring meeting under trainer Pap ¬ palardo Brother Joe Quartier bought a twoyearold filly named Lighthouse Blues Lighthouse Blue Ballad by Balladier from Woodland Farm this winter and the youngster is now going through her paces at Monmouth Park Training Center Wolf Hill Farm Oceanport As a point of interest this filly is out of Blue Ballad once owned by Gulfstreams Horace Wade Both brothers are sons of Frank Quartier I Sr owner of the fabulous Frankies Market in Lodi where everything from apples to zircons can be bought in one sprawling market place placet t A A ASeveral Several stables have remained at the Oceanport center to await the opening at Monmouth Park on June 11 One of these is JeffLin Stable where trainer E O Zim ¬ merman has the fillies Goes A Tide Chi jcuelo Tempesta Plamides Platter Midway Isle and Just For Size Attention Toomba and the colts Mariners Guide Nordlicht Barcuda and Jetpassage Jet Flight Scarlet Beauty Now that Blue Sparkler has been retired from racing Woodland Farms hopes are pinned on her threeyearold full brother High Sparkle Knave High Blue Tiara who will make his first Jersey bow as a threeyearold in the Delaware Valley IStakes on May 11 In the yearling colt barn at Woodland is another chestnut full brother to the Haskell pair as yet un ¬ named who may well follow in the foot ¬ steps of his illustrious sister This yearling is from the last crop of Knave High who until his death in 1955 stood at the farm for a number of years Farm manager managerContinued Continued on Page Eleven NEW JERSEY JERSEYBy By PETER COLE Continued from Page Ten Edward Feakes has not yet announced plans for breeding the top handicap mare of 1956 but it is expected that she will be bebooked booked early this month Woodland Farm with a complement of over 100 thoroughbreds has wholeheart ¬ edly endorsed the vaccination program for equine encephalomyelitis and farm veter ¬ inarian Dr Robert L Ticehurst is complet ¬ ing the inoculations on all of the Haskell owned stock and all boarders whose own ¬ ers have expressed a desire for the protec ¬ tion the vaccine offers All yearlings broodmares stallions and racing stock as well as ponies and saddle horses on the grounds will have received immunization before the end of the month The inocula ¬ tions made intradermally in the neck pro ¬ duce no reaction in the horse other than local soreness for a day or two and in the entire state no vaccinated horse has had his training schedule interrupted by the shots The bivalent vaccine which is ad ¬ ministered protects horses against eastern and western strains of the disease which is carried by wild birds and transmitted by mosquito bite Horsemen and owners are reminded that they may procure the vac ¬ cine by applying to Dr William S Miller track veterinarian at Garden State Park The project initiated as a precautionary measure by the three flat racing associa ¬ tions for the protection of racing stock has been enthusiastically received by trainers and owners ownersTrainer Trainer Harry Wells will campaign a number of horses for Mr and Mrs Reeve Schleys Raritan Stable These include Base Runner BasisPuzzling Hello Jundear Stymie Unquote and Countess Rusty Casemate taris For Miss Jerry Nietzel he is training Cherokee Road and several twoyearolds and Wells has two hopefuls owned by Dr John D Preece of Trenton TrentonL L C Vannan participated in the annual Sports Night at the West Orange Lions Club last week Others on the program were former boxing star Mickey Walker and sports commentator Mel Allen At his Ruvan Farm in Morristown Vannan stands the good sire Round View who last year enjoyed a high percentage sof winners among his 1954 crop This is Round Views second season at stud in New Jersey and he has attracted a number of fine mares to his court courtMr Mr and Mrs Mark M Jones of Wood vale Farm R D Princeton Jiave two April foals by Exceptional who also stands at Ruvan Farm One is a colt out of Meri Juel the other a filly out of Court Juel Their good mare Famor dropped a filly by Basis at the farm two weeksago
