New Jersey By William Phillips Shea Happy Over Garden State Prospects Tracks Location Boosts Stakes Program Lure Top Performers From Other Sectors SectorsGARDEN GARDEN STATE PARK Camden N J May 4 Mathius C Ty Shea the rosycheeked Celt who man f ullv nerforms the duties as racing secretary and handi capper for the Garden State Park association sat back in his chair this morning and with a satisfied air announced Between the better grade horses we have on the grounds and pardon the ex ¬ pression those we will borrow from our neighboring tracks it looks like we will have the best stakes program in our history When Shea speaks of borrow ¬ ing horses from the neighbors he refers to the performers who State Park from nearby Maryland and New York This track is most fortunate in its strategic location between these other two major racing centers and it is not un ¬ usual for the stakes at Garden State Park to be drawn up mainly from horses shipped in overnight especially for these fixtures Just in the opening Valley Forge Handicap there were Wheatley Stables Gray Phantom Brae Burn Farms War Piper and George D Wideners Tellarian all of whom vanned the short and rapid trip over the New Jersey turnpike from their stable head ¬ quarters on Long Island IslandThese These visitations from the better horses from other tracks always add interest and importance to the local events and the New Jersey racing fan is thereby given a cosmopolitan view of the sport that is hard to find elsewhere Naturally when these stables ship in they usually bring along their own jockeys so that the New Jersey turfites are nearly as familiar with the Arcaros Atkinsons and others as they are with the riders who campaign regularly in the Skeeter State StateCalumet Calumet Competition Insures Quality Sport SportIn In speaking of these healthful factors Shea was quick to point out that Garden State Park has an ample supply of quality thoroughbreds itself Just the presence of Mrs Gene Markeys Calumet Farm stars is enough to insure top sport Trainer H A Jimmy Jones has made Garden State Park his spring head ¬ quarters for the past two seasons and the famed devils red and blue silks have come to be accepted as a local banner by the Jerseyites who have thrilled to the sight of watching them carried to triumph in the races here The bulk of the Calumet string already is bedded down here Except for a small division that will invade Pim ¬ lico for the Preakness the remainder will be shipped here from Kentucky following the running of the Derby DerbyOf Of the many outstanding thoroughbreds of which Garden State takes pride this spring are Woodland Farms High Sparkle and Bohemia Stables Ambehav ing Neither of these aspiring threeyearolds came around in time to compete in the Kentucky Derby but their owners are confident that they will figure prom ¬ inently in the later classics High Sparkle a full brother to Blue Sparkler showed great promise in his two races this spring in New York the Gotham and the Jamaica Since arriving at Garden State Park he has blossomed forth with a new brand of speed in his morning trials and appears to have settled down con ¬ siderably Just how far he has progressed will be seen next Saturday when he competes in the six furlongs Delaware Valley Stakes StakesAmbehaving Ambehaving was seriously considered a Kentucky Derby threat until the Wood Memorial when he slipped a stifle bumping into the gate at the start which caused him to grab a quarter The injury has him on the shelf but trainer J M Doc Lee has him with the stable here and hopes to bring him around in time to compete in the 50000 added Jersey Stakes on Satur ¬ day May 25 Lee happily reports that the homebred son of Ambiorix was not hurt as seriously as at first believed and he already has had him on the track for a sightseeing walk The colt seems to run stronger the farther he goes and thjere is still a chance that he will have a lot to say about the rich Belmont Stakes StakesBolero Bolero U Sets Sights on Cherry HrH HrHThen Then there is John L McKnights Bolero U the current sensation of the twoyearold ranks wrto set a worlds record winning the Gulfstream Park Juvenile and convincingly trounced the best seen in New York to date in winning the recent Youthful at Jamaica His owner is setting his sights on the 15000 added Cherry Hill Stakes to be renewed on Wednesday May 22 There are a host of other promising youngsters on the grounds and they can be expected to gain national prominence later in the season seasonThe The Calumet Farm which was the countrys leading money winner last year could practically fill a stakes race just from its own barn Top man of the stable is Bardstown who is expected to join the local division sometime next week Barbizon is to arrive Monday Among those already on hand are Fabius Princess Turia one of the best handicap mares in training Rosewood and Spring Violets a pair of threeyearold fillies just coming to the fore Boone Blaze and Whig a pair of colts who with Barbizon are capable stand standContinued Continued on Page FortyP NEW JERSEY JERSEYBy By WILLIAM PHILLIPS Continued from Pag Seven Sevenins ins for Gen Duke and Iron Liege and we must not forget the gallant mare Amoret who shares honors with Princess Turia in the distaff department Jones has plenty of twoyearolds along too but it is the Jones Boys custom to bjing them along slowly and they probably will not see much action before midsummer midsummerNever Never to be overlooked either is the powerful Brookfield Farm of Harry Isaacs Already he has uncovered two of the fleet ¬ est fillies to campaign this spring in I Off ¬ beat and Infatuation winners of the Pri oress and Cherry Blossom Stakes respec ¬ tively Included in the large string trained by young and personable Ed I Kelly are the stalwarts Itobe Imagem and Im ¬ promptu Irate is being groomed as a Jersey Stakes candidate and there is practically a barnful of twoyearolds who are either here or at the farm Brookfield is one outfit which sends out its twoyear olds early earlyAgain Again there is William Hal Bishop with his large stable mostly of platers but with stakes eligibles such as Kid Jr Mrs Mark and Melody Mine William G Helis Jr returns with his two 60000 yearling pur ¬ chases coming around to top form There are many many others Whatever the financial success of the meeting and the prospects are very bright it is assured that the sport itself will be of the finest
