under a brilliant ride by Conn Mc Creary that appeared to catch his rivals napping Ellis Farms Little Pache de ¬ lighted a crowd of 36115 here at Jamaica today by winning the first running of the 27950 Bed O Roses Handicap by four widening lengths over Morty Freedmans Gay Life Christopher T Chenerys Mano ¬ tick finished a length farther back after stumbling at the start and all but spilling Bill Boland over her head while D H Stables Pardala was a scant nose out of the monye Little Pache ran the mile and a sixteenth in a dismal 147 over a fast but deep and exhausting track and paid 360 360This This was the third straight triumph for Little Pache a light brown daughter of Apache Little Spooky by Jamestlown and rewarded owner Jake Litwin with a gross prize of 19200 of which 300 was the nominating and starting fees Mrs Samuel j A Peck sister of C V Whitney and an owner and breeder in her own right pre ¬ sented Litwin with the silver trophy in the winners circle circleGay Gay Life was first to flash in front as the field left the gate in front of the stands at the start of the Bed o Roses while Mano ¬ tick lost several lengths However Myrtles Jet and Korestes shot to the front before reaching the clubhouse turn and engaged in a headandhead duel for the pace in the run around that bend followed by Planchette Little Pache and Gay Life Par ¬ dala and Manotick brought up the read of the field of seven sevenNearing Nearing the end of the backstretch Planchette made a brief bid that carried her into command as Myrtles Jet stopped badly and Korestes also began to weaken At the same point McCreary roused Little Pache and quickly moved into contention along the rail while Atkinson sat still on Gay Life evidently unaware of the corn Continued on Page four Little Pache paratively slow pace The half was run in 48M and the six furlongs in 113 113After After leaving the backstretch McCreary steered Little Pache around Planchette and Korestes and quickly opened a daylight lead Meanwhile Manotick and Pardala surged up to Gay Life and Atkinson ab ¬ ruptly came to life rousing the Eight Thirty filly sharply but being forced to make his move on the extreme outside at the loss of some ground Once in command Little Pache drew away steadily and obviously had speed in reserve at the end while Gay Life linished willingly to take second honors though able to gain only about a length on the winner in the final furlong Manotick turned in an excellent effort in view of her fatal false step at the start while Pardala also raced creditably though hanging at the end endLittle Little Pache who was scratched from an auction at Hialeah last winter first flashed into prominence when beating Blue Banner and Searching in the Gallorette Stakes at Pimlico last December 1 She was a dis ¬ appointment in Florida but has been un ¬ beaten here this spring outclassing every ¬ thing that has been sent against her thus far farCatherine Catherine Gallerys honest old Longleat stopped in frpnt of the odds board during the post parade before the first race and refused to budge for a few moments as though incredulous at the illuminated numbers which showed Benjamin Boyars Wheat State favored over him Longleat did not stop when the race was run how ¬ ever while Wheat State did eventually finishing last and apparently convincing Bill Boland that he had broken down when he took a bad step turning for home At the end of six furlongs in 113 appren tice Edward J Decker had Longleat three and a half lengths before Esquisse who led Robert W by another length The nine yearold son of Some Chance paid 930 and combined with Angpet Farms Calgary for a 10510 Daily Double DoubleEvidently Evidently fearing the tiring race track nine of the 10 riders in the second race at a mile and a sixteenth left the gate pulling up including Calgary whb broke in front under Ray Broussard The excep ¬ tion was young Decker who rushed Pleg onit into command and paid for his temer ¬ ity by finishing eighth Calgary assumed command when Plegonit faded and then engaged in a bumping duel with Elmen dorfs Chiffonard through the stretch with both horses appearing equally at fault At the end Calgary came on again to score by a neck while Chiffonard was another five lengths before Bright Plumes Calgary paid 1630 straight and required 149 for the journey journeyClearwater Clearwater Stables Azalea Town a threeyearold son of Coaltown who had been training cleverly came up a good thing in the third race but ran out from under Mike Danisi before the start and was caught by outrider Lucas Dupps after going m a furlong That maneuver cost Azalea Town what chance he had Adele L Rands Simon the Bold won the sixfurlong dash by a half length over J M Roeb lings Heathertone who led Isidor Biebers Merchantprice another two arid a half lengths Simon the Bold one of the few offspring of the prematurely gelded Prince Simon paid 1360 and required 115 for the jurney jurneyMrs Mrs Jan Burkes Field of Honor who was scoring his third straight at the meet ¬ ing became the first winning favorite of the afternoon when he skipped to a handy victory in the Inwood Purse fifth event reaching the end of the mile and onesix ¬ teenth two lengths before Glenelg Stables pacemaking Assemblyman Greentree Stables Arnica who had forced the pace most of the way was four lengths farther back and seven lengths before Harry G Jones Sunday Star Field of Honor was ridden by Bill Boland who had time to look back as he passed the odds board and paid 630 after getting the distance in 145
