ABOUT THE FUTURITY CANDIDATES. Colin Has Demonstrated that He Can Win Smallest Value in History. The smallest field numerically that ever started for the Futurity was ten when Ogden won in 1S0G. The present outlook is that no more may start this year. Apparently the issue has narrowed to the single problem of whether Colin can be beaten or not, and to those inclined to the affirmative appearances are discouraging. So far no opposing two-year-old of sufficiently high class has been uncovered at Saratoga, and in this respect the meeting has failed to meet its traditions. There are some possibilities hidden in the Whitney barn, but it is to be feared that Burgher, Jersey Lightning and Yorkville Beau have not trained up to the form hoped for on the basis of their distinguished ancestry on both sides. At any rate, trainer Rogers has not shown either in public. He gave Artful two educational races at Saratoga in her year and then won the Futurity with her. It was surmised that something akin to this policy would be pursued witli Burgher, but the capabilities of this brother to Burgomaster are still a stable secret. It is known that last spring Rogers considered Burgher a better racer than his superb brother was when a two-year -old. But the colt has not impressed other trainers and experienced observers who have seen him exercised at Saratoga. It is said that his action when running is faulty and that he is excessively a "climber." But that is not conclusive. Some very fast and famous racers have been climbers. Mr. Rogers is a very sagacious horseman, and it may be that he has decided to save Burgher for the Futurity without taking any chance of losing his maiden allowances. It may also come out in that race that Burgher is all that he thought him to be last spring. In such ease Colin would not have smooth sailing In the Futurity. But outside of this possibility the race? appears to lieiiOWasgreat-a certainty?." for Colin as a race could be in advance. He ia truly a great two-year-old, and with his breeding allowance of five pounds neutralizing that much of his "penalties lie will have but 125 pounds to carry, au easy burden for him. The horses that seem reasonably sure to start in the Futurity are Mr. Belmputs Fair Play, Fred Burlews Chapultepec, F. J. Farrells Jim Gaffney, W. B. Jennings Julia Powel, John E. Maidens Meelick or King James, Mr. Sanfords Fort Johnson or Chief Brant, R. T. Wilson Jr.s Beaucoup, Oneck Stables Ben Fleet, Mr. Keenes Colin and the selected one or more of the Whitney stable. Sixty-four youngsters are eligible and If Colin was not in the way a big field would contest the race. But be is in the way" and it seems so hopeless a case that when the pinch comes it is even quite probable some of those named will be absentees. It is believed that Peter Quince will accompany Colin to the post. This is another son of Commando that is reputed to lie a second edition of Colin in speed. Many believe lie has been kept in reserve to win the Futurity instead of Colin. This is interesting and almost anything can be believed of such a powerful stable as Mr. Keene is the fortunate possessor of this year. But it lias been amply demonstrated that Colin can win the Futurity as against the public form of the year, while, what Peter Quince can do, is merely guess work except to his owner and trainer. It may occur that -Mr. Whitney will also send several candidates to the post. Besides the three referred to that have not. started, he lias Stamina, Bonnie Star, Bar None and Adriana engaged and Stamina may be the best two-year-old lllly of the year. At any rate many are of that opinion and when she won the second half of the Double Event it was said that it would have required Colins best form to have held her safe. Bonnie Star is a chestnut filly by Star Shoot Bonnie Blue II. and so a half-sister to Blues and Blue Girl. Mr. Whitney gave 0,000 for her last year at the sale of the Raceland Stud yearlings. Sie lias never started and is another dark one of possible great merit in his stable. Antaeus, King Sol, Royal Vane, Smoker, Keep Moving, Big Chief, The Squire, Dennis Stafford, Pomander, Question Mark and Onatassa are a group of useful youngsters of which one or more might be started, but "whats the use" will probably be the reflection that will probably come up at the last moment to deter their owners from planking down the 50 required from starters. The Futurity thlsVyear had 027 nominations of mares, of which 339 wer void. Of the youngsters eligible 2S2 declared at 0 each, 05 at 0 each, 10! at 1907.sh0 each, 30 at 0 each and two at 00 each. At present the gross vajue of the race including its 0,000 added money, is 0,040. This will be increased by 50 for each starter, hut in any event it cannot fail to be the least valuable Futurity on record. The least valuable previously was that of 1S99, which Chacornac won for Mr. Keene. It was then worth 1,000 gross. The records of the probable starters named that have raced and of the contingent possibilities are as follows: Horse. Sts. 1st. 2d. 3d. Unp. Won.
