TRACKLESS WINS BY A HEAD DEFEATS RATHER ROYAL FOR THE HANDICAP AT FORT ERIE. All Bookmakers Are Cited to Answer the Charge of Keeping a Gambling Place Toronto People Force the Issue. f Buffalo, N. Y., August 23. The wise division .got a jolt when Rather Royal was beaten In the seven furlong handicap at Fort Erie this afternoon. Ail the big bettors centered on this horse as the best thing of the afternoon, but Trackless, under a splendid ride by Schaller, proved the winner by a small margin. The fourth race furnished another spirited finish in which Toddies was the victor by a matter of inches. The race was a mile selling affair iii which Toddles was entered for 1907.sh00, an,d after she won Pat Civlll boosted her to ,100. Goldblatt protected the mare and bought her In at the usual advance. The defeat of Gold Note In this race proved a big upset for the Toronto delegation. Subpoenas were served on ail the blockmen in tiie betting ring before the first race today. They were cited to appear at Wclland Tuesday next to answer the charge of maintaining a common gambling booth. The charge is being pressed by Toronto people and may have some effect on the proposed extension of the meeting. The management, however, does not expect It to amount to anything. Jockey J. Foley left tonight for Quebec, where he will ride for Lieutenant-Colonel Sewell during the two days meeting given by the Quebec Hunt Club.
