For the reason that he is a half brother to McChesney the performances of Wiso Mason were of more Ihan ordinary interest to those Chicagoans who but. a few years back were in the habit of deeming the miglily white-faced chestnut able to cope successfully with apy race horse in the land.. It cannot be said that Wise Mason raced up to the standard of his famous half brother, but he ran well and may show great improvement as a three-year-old. McChesney himself was beaten many times when a two-year-old. running unsuccessfully in nine races before lie finally achieved his first win in a purse race at Hawthorne. He afterwards developed into one of the greatest race horses of bis time and. in the way of a family characteristic, it may be that Wise Mason will emulate his example. He made his debut in a selling race at Brighton P.each, July 17. and ran fourth to Rubia Granda, Lady Selina and Arionette. at live furlongs in 1:03?. In his next attempt be improved over this showing by winning a purse at five and a half furlongs in l:07jU with 110 pounds, defeating Arondack, 101; 0. U. Kid, 102, and two more. Then he ran unplaced nt the same distance to Etberial, Sententious and Ruble, but was unlucky and pocketed. Moving over to the Empire City track, lie won at his first start, defeating .rania, Arondack, Ragman and ten more at three-quarters of a mile .in l.:12j. a very creditable display of speed. In another purse race at the same track be won from Personal. Tom Hayward and three others, at five and a half furlongs in 1:0S with ease. Then, in the valuable Knickerbocker Handicap, for two-year-olds at about, three-quarters of a mile, he ran fourth to Dick Roller. Erbet and Footpad. He carried 115 pounds to 112 on Dick Roller. 100 on Erbet and 11! on Footpad and was barely lieu ten out for third place. On the second day of the Gravescnd autumn meeting Fitz Herbert defeated him by a head at five and a half furlongs, run in 1:07J. Madman was third and three more unplaced. Witching Hour and Law I on Wiggins running unplaced. His only other winning race after that was for a purse at Empire City. October 21, for which lie was a 1 to 0 favorite, and won at three-quarters pulled up in l:i:B. witli Garland second and Siskin third. His last race of the year was at Jamaica, October 31, and in this he was second to Waponoca. beaten a length and having up lis pounds to 113 on the winner.
