Track Slightly Affected by Rain, but a Big Crowd Attends— Vermont a Victor and Is Heavily Bid Up — Track Gossip. Baltimore. Mil.. April 22. — Edward Trotters greatly improved .. X. Akin repeated his vietory of ii few days Hgo when lie was returned winner of the Philadelphia llandieap over a good hand of sprinters at Havre do Grace this afternoon. The race was offered as the feature of the Saturday eard and was ■ three-quarters dash witli ,500 added. Then-were nine starters, including two that were added this morning, namely. Top o tli" Morning ml Carbide. After quite a delay at the post the others were dispatched without Carbide, which refused to start. Toi o tli* Morning was the first to show in front, followed by A. X. Akin and Sir Edgar. In a mild drive A. X. Akin disposed of the tiring pacemaker and had quite a safe margin at the end over Sir Edgar. The track while affected by the rain of the previous night, was in good condition. Xext in point of importance to the stake race, a dash of five and a half furlongs under selling con-diti ns. was offered. This brought together a speedy band and the winner turned up in J. O. Tallinns" Vermont. The victory, however, was a costly one. for he was advanced .00 over his entered price of S1.S00. at which figure he was bought in. It. F. Carman. Jr.. did the bidding. Ida Claire, winner of the fifth race, was advanced 00 over her entered price by A. C. Parretto and also bought in. While being galloped this morning. Yodeles bled while passing the stand and fell. The exercise boy escaped with a severe shaking up. Frederick Johnson was a visitor at Havre de Grace today to see his Peep oDay four-year-old Top o th Morning race in the Philadelphia Handicap. lgernnn Daingerfield. assistant secretary of the Jockey Club, was also on hand for the days racing. Dr." McCully came on from Xew York to look over some horses. John Powers reported today that Harry Shaw had entirely recovered from the severe attack of influenza he contracted in Hanvana and that he was galloping again. H. G. Bedwell has purchased the Watercress mare Water Lily. There will be an important meeting of the Canadian Racing Associations at Toronto next Thursday. Joseph McLennan was busily engaged today taking entries for the Windsor, Woodbine and Fort Erie stakes. He stated that lie was meeting with a ready resiKinse from the horsemen. Thomas Costigan was a visitor from Xew York and there were other Xew Yorkers over for the day. Although the weather was anything but agreeable, Washington sent over eight coaches crowded with race-goers. Jockey Graves was suspended for four days for cutting across with Key Kunis in the opening race.
