MR. BELMONT CAPTURES A STAKE RACE. Fernrook First in the Stuyvesant Handicap in a Close Finish with Mustard — Track Talk. New York, May 23. — A cold and drizzling rain, which set in early today, was responsible for a somewhat decreased attendance at Jamaica this afternoon. The going, however, was better than was anticipated and fair time was recorded in the various races. The fields, although small, were well matched and spirited racing resulted. The Stuyvesant Handicap for three-year-olds at three-quarters, with ,500 added, provided the feature and brought out a field above the average. Solveig had little trouble in beating Ijobelia in the opening race. The latter left the barrier and opened a lengths lead on Solveig. but the latter was under restraint and. when Keogh called on her. went to the front quickly. Old Drury, the other starter was never a contender. Ancon showed the way in the second race from flag to finish. It was an open race, nearly every horse having a following. The Milltown Stables representative. Agon, furnished a surprise by beating Charmeuse in a drive for second money. Monocacy BKlW his victory of a few days ago in the third race. Naushon made the pace until Monocacy made his move and the race was over. Mr. Belmont took the Stuvyvesant Handicap, the feature of the day. with Fernrock in a driving finish with Mustard and Daddys Choice. Prince of Como headed the procession until well in the stretch then retired. AftPr that Mustard went to the front only to be overtaken by Fernrock. which went around the others with a rush. Haynes had to go to the whip to get the verdict. Whimsy, one of the choices, failed badly, as did Vermont and Grasp. It was claimed that track conditions were a trifle against Whimsy. Sam McMeekin turned the tables on Ambrose in the fifth race, the latter having beaten him the last time they met. Today Sam McMeekin followed Ambrose to the stretch, then moved up and took the purse under a mild hand ride. The nine imported two-year-olds belonging to the Kentucky Stable are training well at Belmont Park, according to Phil T. Chinn, and some of his stable representatives will soon be seen under colors. Jockey T. Davies is under contract to ride for W. H. Karrick this year and can easily make 108 pounds. There is an epidemic of coughing among the horses at Jamaica and Belmont Park. This is the principle cause for the light fields, which may also lie looked for at Belmont Park for the first few days. There are also many complaints that the two-year-olds generally are suffering from bucked shins. Jacoba has been suffering from an attack of coughing since her initial start last week and, unless she shows improvement immediately, she will not be sent to Kentucky to start in the Oaks Saturday. Jockey J. Metcalf will do the riding for the Mar-rone Stable in the future. Jockey E. Taplin is expected at Belmont Park Thursday by his employer. George Odom. Jockey J. McTaggart was fined 0 for using obscene language to another rider during the running of the second race Jockey Loftus was injured in a runaway accident on Monday last. He will be able to resume riding at Pelmont Park. Workouts with the track good this morning were: Beau of Menlo — Seven-eighths in 1:32%. Buskin — Mile in 1:55. Harry Shaw — Five-eighths in 1:05.
