BLACK SERVANTS TRIUMPH Gives Weight and a Beating to Some Speedy Horses. : -4 Youneed Takes a Race in an Exciting Finish with. Honor Man Favorites Fail. ; -4 LATONIA, Ky., July i. E. R. Bradleys Black-Servant, making his initial start at this meeting, again gave evidence of his sterling qualities and scored over a good band, in a fashion that few other three-year-olds have at this meeting, con-ceding chunks of weight to all the others, that included nineteen pounds by the Kentucky scale to Marjorie Hynes, twenty-two pounds to the speedy Ginger and thirteen and sixteen pounds respectively to Aphie Dear and Firebrand. Black Servants performance this afternoon was of his usual businesslike" style, his ability to head his opponents at once figuring as a decided advantage in his favor; for he usually makes a pace that keeps his followers tiptoeing and, more than often, their elimination is complete before the stretch is reached. Marjorie Hynes and Giuger alternated as his closest followers today and held on gamely until the stretch, where Lyke shook liim up slightly and he moved away fast, but finding himself practically unattended, slowed his pace until Aphie Dear, which had been a distant follower and lost ground on the setretoh turn by a wide swing, loomed up with a menacing challenge and forced Lyke to strike Black Servant sharply to remind him of his task. The colt again buckled down and came by the finish a full Ie.igth in advance. Aphie Bear was an easy second and Ginger just managed to nose out with Marjorie Hynes but a head away. The race was at a mile and a sixteentii and served as the outstanding feature of todays card. Black Servant will be shipped to Windsp-. where he is extensively engaged in stakes, including the Devonshire International 0,000 race for three-year-olds, in which he will meet some of the eastern cracks before invading Saratoga. There was no relief this afternoon from die intense heat that has been prevalent here for over a week. In spite of it the attendance this afternoon was large and the racing was again of a wholesome Variety, but it was not lucrative to the talent, as favorites were downed with frequency, Black Servant being the pronounced exception. GIPSY QUEENS FAILURE. Gipsy Queen was given the call in the opener, hut the best she could do was land in third place, her failure being primarily due to a slow beginning. An exceptionally close finish came in the race witii Youneed and Honor Man featuring. The judges awarded the purse to Youneed. A disgruntled small band immediately took exception and began a noisy demonstration before the judges stand. The humorous phase of the "situation was that the demonstration was directed against the stewards and not the placing judges. Cap Rock and Pegasus, a pair of youngsters from the Montfort Jones stable, were installed overwhelming favorites in the second race, but Billy Brush and Hcphaistos had the finish .between them. Billy Brush winning by a neck. Neither of the Jones colts showed anything above the ordinary," though Pegasus is said to have worked sensationally in private. Dark Horse, which only recently changed ownership, made good at the first asking for his new owner and beat Bunga Buck to the finish, with Bettina in third place. The latter was the favored one, but the disappointment of the race was Sir Lawnfal, which retired completely from the contest in the first half mile. An ordinary band started in the fourth race and Tom Norris succeeded in winning, beatiug Wild Flower home, and Ed Garrison finished third. Sam Reh was the favored one iiere, but after flattering for five-eighths he fell back. Billy Star, in Montfort Jones silks, upset a good thing in Hold Me in the sixth race. Garners su-. Iterior riding ability over Fields being the deciding factor in the victory. Tin; suddenly improved Wadswortlis Last won in the closing dash in easy style, Adelia W. finishing second and Melviu third. Jockey Garner returned to the saddle this afternoon after a suspension of five days. Youneed finished badly lame in the first race. Elpis had to be destroyed as a result of coming out of his last race badly cut down. Mose Goldblatt has changed his plans and will remain at Latonia during the period intervening until the opening of the fall Kentucky racing. He has made additions to his stable by the .purchase from Walden and Morris of the colts Mooresque, Reliability and Smiling Lad. Charles Rowe will take Miss Jemima, Leo Fisher and Judge Brewer to Windsor to race.
