FORT ERIES LARGEST CROWD King Thrush Wins Closing Day Feature in a Rousing Finish Favorites Fail. FORT ERIE. Out.. July 9. J. K. L. Ross furnished the winner of the Statler Hotel Handicap, which was offered as the feature attraction of the closing program of the Niagara Racing Association, when King Thrush led home Mm k Orange in a grueling finish, with Sandy Heal third. The winner was ridden by Claver and made all the pace and hung on with rare courage under the whip through the final quarter to gain the decision by the shortest of margins. It was a sparkling raiv and a wonderful finish. So pleased was trainer Henry McDaniel that he departed from his usual custom and complimented Claver for his vigorous finish. It was probably the best ride Claver has shown this year. The going was fast for the opening dash and turned to a sticky and slow track when a sudden rainstorm visited the course and lusted during the running of the third race. The storm forced one of the largest crowds in the history .if the club to hunt points of shelter for a few minutes. However, the sun again made its appearance, but the close, sweltering heat of early morning was dispelled. The public was all at sea and the talent had a hard time lauding winners. Long-p;iced horses were in the ascendency right from the start, the opening dash being annexed by Moss Fox II. at 2.25 for the usual investment. Marble, a first-time starter from the Koss stable, was second, with Dorothy Huckner third. The Inferno Handicap, which was offered for three-year-olds and over, witnessed the first success at the meeting for M. IS rentier when Koyal Visitor accounted for the race, with Sir Clarence second and Yorkist third. The winner was another that was neglected by the players and paid a substantial dividend. Truro, which was installed a favorite in the fourth nice, was kicked while at the post and failed to gather any part of the purse. Imcaster departed for New York last night to report to trainer J. Fitzsinnnons. Hay Hryson. acting for E. K. Hryson, at private terms this morning purchased from H. A. Coburn the two-year-old The Manageress. Trainer Henry McDaniel this morning dispatched the J. K. L. Hoss stable to "Windsor, leaving but the three starters here, which will be shipped on Monday. The five head that were left at Montreal following the meeting at that point were expected to arrive in Hamilton today, having been shipped earlier in the week. Jockey J. McTaggart. following the last race today, departed for his Inane in Haltimore for a few days, reporting to the Thcrneliffe stable at "Windi-or. Tin; stable cf G. V. Formau and J. J. Farrell will be shipped to Hamilton to await the resumption of racing there. Hoth Mr. Farrell and Mr. Forman depart for Haltimore tonight. j Ex-jockey Willie Morris has been engaged by the Kenton Stable on the recommendation of starter Morrissey to break tin; large band of yearlings at present quartered in Kentucky. Morris left New York yesterday for the western farm. A. L. Kirby will ship his stable from here to "Windsor to participate in the meetings at that point. John Marino will also proceed to Windsor. AV. C. Westmoreland traded the two-;.c;;i--oId Dare to S. A. Clopton for Tig Noise. The latter will join the shipment for New York today. At private terms this moiuiug Charles Koerner purchased from Clarence Buxton the plater Leading Star, which the latter secured but a few days agj from J. A. Coburn. E. W. Moure departs for Windsor tonight. In addition to his own horses he takes Skeer Face. Cock o the Main and another for W. C. Weant. C. IS. Haker of Detroit this morning purchased from C. L. Whiting tin; two-year-old Rosa AtkSn. Carey Winfrey has decided to ship from here to Windsor, and will leave here Sunday.
