MOUNT SURPRISES JOHNSON Before the Race Buddy Bauers BauersRider Rider Laments He Did Dot Have HaveMount Mount on McLeans Jock COLLINSVILLE 111 June 6 Alfred Johnson who rode E R Bradleys Buddy Bauer to victory in the Collinsville feature on Saturday did not have even a remote hope that his mount would be the winner He ex ¬ pressed regret before the running that he did not have the mount on Edward B McLeans Jock JockEddie Eddie Ambrose who rode H P Whitneys Whiskery winner of the Kentucky Derby into second place a half length back of Buddy Bauer in a sportsmanlike manner blamed the defeat of the colt on his mistakes in the running of the race and said that Whiskery should have been a winner winnerEarl Earl Sande who finished third with Os mand the Joseph E Widener gelding which was a close second to Whiskery in the Ken ¬ tucky Derby was disappointed His com ¬ ment was that the race proved that Osmand is only a sprinter He offered no other ex ¬ cuse for the defeat defeatIf If any excuse could be offered it could properly be made for Whiskery and it was a fine manly thing for Ambrose to admit his mistakes And he was in no sense altogether to blame for some of the bad luck that at ¬ tended the Whitney starter starterAmbrose Ambrose in an effort to save the top weight as much as possible saved him on the inside back of Osmand and Jock Then when he attempted to move he found himself cut off At the head of the stretch he first made a move to go to the outside and then changed to the inside This indecision nat ¬ urally was a bit of a handicap to the colt coltAlfred Alfred Johnson rode a cool welljudged race He had Buddy Bauer in a good posi ¬ tion throughout and only made one move on the colt through the last quarter of a mile It was timed so perfectly that it brought vic ¬ tory
