AL SABATH After whom the Joliet Stakes winner was named Busy Campaign Planned tor Alsab Winner ot Joliet Stakes at Crete May Race in Both Miles Standish and Mayflower at Suffolk Dotons Oval OvalCRETE CRETE 111 June 6 Mrs Al Sabaths Alsab winner of the 5000 added Joliet Stakes here Saturday may invade the East this summer At least the bay son of Good Goods Winds Chant by Wildair has been nominated for the Miles Standish Stakes and Mayflower Stakes twoyearold features of the Suffolk Downs meeting The Chicago owned colt has also been named for the Hyde Park Stakes at Arlington Park and the Washington Park Futurity He was not named for the Arlington Park Futurity as he was the property of Thomas Piatt when the nominations for this years renewal of that fixture closed and the Kentuckian did not name him In winning the fourteenth running of the Joliet Stakes Alsab earned 5100 to parlay the bankroll he already has to his credit to 8245 for four victories in ten starts startsConsidering Considering the fact that Sabbath pur ¬ chased the colt for 700 at the Saratoga sales last year his record thus far already classifies him as a Bargain purchase and the manner of his victory in the Joliet Stakes was so impressive as to indicate that he will be a factor in the other stakes to which he has been nominated Sabath presented the colt to his wife who named him for her husband husbandSIRE SIRE BROOKMEADE STAR STARGood Good Goods sire of the Chicago colt will be remembered as a handicap star in the Brookmeade Stable of Mrs Isabel Dodge 31oane back around 1935 and 1936 when Bob Smith trained for that establishment Among his other victories Good Goods won the 1935 running of the Havre de Grace Handicap at hat track in Maryland and the Rochambeau Handicap at Narragansett Park He also accounted for the 1936 running of the Gov ¬ ernors Handicap at the Rhode Island course Good Goods is by Neddie Brocatelle xby Radium Alsab is of the first crop of the former Brookmeade star to get to the races which probably is why Sabbath was able to pick him up for 700 700In In accounting for the Joliet Stakes Alsab was vindicating himself for his defeat here by Valdina Alpha in his only other outing at this course on May 21 In a fivefurlong allowance test that day the Good Goods colt didnt get to running untilthe stretch was reached and through the front lane he chased the Valdina representative to the fastest fiveeighths effort turned in over the Lincoln Fields racing strip in more than two years 100 flat Again Saturday he was in difficulty during the early running but Earl Pool took him around horses on the final turn and then found an opening to shove him through when Valdina Orphan went wide at the head of the stretch From that point he quickly made a show of his opposi ¬ tion and veteran observers were remarking about the manner in which he won as he finished out with his ears forward while he ate up ground with a wideopen and easy gallop gallopSHUFFLED SHUFFLED BACK IN EAULY RUNNING RUNNINGAfter After his wifes colt had won Sabath re ¬ marked that he had given up on him when he was shuffled back early I thought he was through said the Hawthorne Park official when he visited the press box after the race raceThe The significant thing about Alsabs victory and that which tempts this observer to pre ¬ dict that the Chicago woman has a good colt was the manner in which he fairly flew past Kirwin in the stretch That gelded son of Good Advice had gone into the lead in im ¬ pressive fashion when the pacesctting Ser ¬ geant Bill had given way turning for home butjust as one paused to marvel at the ease with which that one was running away from his field out of nowhere came Alsab to handle easilyTo the Covington gelding easily To Kirwins credit let it be said that he didnt quit when Alsab came buzzing up on the outside of him as the veteran Earl Pool sent the colt along with hand and heel He responded gamely enough to Jimmy Haritos urging but he just wasnt a match for Al ¬ sab Of course sizing up twoyearolds is purely a speculative proposition but Alsab may have what it takes to win the stakes engagements which are ahead of him himValdina Valdina Alpha Alsabs conqueror in his previous outing here was in the field which the Good Goods colt whipped to win the Joliet Valdina Alpha however had to start from outside the barrier because of the size of the field He was away poorly and never did get to running at any stage of the race Reviewing Alsabs career before he won the Joliet Stakes we find that he graduated from the maiden ranks in his third start in a fourfurlong allowance race at Tropical Park on March 28 On that occasion Red Howell rated him along third until the stretch was reached and then sent him up to win by a length as he completed the dis ¬ tance inj47 He next went to the rices on April 8 at the Coral Gables course but the best he could do was finish fourth in an allowance race over a track which was slightly off Miss Shopper won the race with Son Islam second and Drawby third thirdFOURTH FOURTH IN BASHFORD MANOR Shipped to Keeneland he made his first appearance under silks at that track in a special weights event and whipped a field which included Some Chance Topnard and Liedevin in 47 flat over a slow track Churchill Downs was his next stop and he made three appearance there before being shipped to Chicago finishing fourth second and first firstWhen When he finished fourth he was behind Black Raider Omathon and Bayridge in the fortieth running of the Bashford Manor Stakes In his next outing he was beaten a nose by Omathon in an allowance race and then just before shipping to Chicago he won an allowance race whipping Alohort Bayridge and Chicago Dr DrIn In pointing out that Alsab in winning the Joliet Stakes a race for which most of the good twoyearolds on the grounds had been particulaily prepared it isnt intended to infer that he is another Whirlaway while reminding you that it was at this course a year ago that the son of Blenheim II graduated from the maiden ranks How ¬ ever it must be admitted that Alsab in vic ¬ tory looked like the best juvenile at the meeting meetingThe The 5000 added Hyde Park Stakes a sixfurlong feature for twoyearolds will be run at Arlington Park oh July 31 Which means that Alsab will probably be pointed for his engagements in the Miles Standish Stakes and Mayflower Stakes at Suffolk Downs in the interim The former is for colts and geldings and the latter is for both sexes and is designed to bring together the winner of the Betsy Ross Stakes a race reserved for fillies and the winner of the Miles Standish Blue Pair won both the Miles Standish and the Mayflower Stakes last year while earning the title as the out ¬ standing juvenile in the Down East area areaSince Since that time however the value of the Miles Standish Betsy Ross and Mayflower Stakes has been raised These events will probably attract the outstanding twoyear olds in the country to the East Boston track this year
