TrotI On the Trot I By MORRIE KURLANSKY 1 1Nutonias Nutonias Grace Shows Fine Form Ed Casagranda Successful Horseman Gene Riegle Almost Nightly Winner WinnerMAYWOOD MAYWOOD PARK Maywood 111 May 8 While Thursday nights program at Maywood Park by no means could be clas ¬ sified as exceptional offering just the cus ¬ tomary week night utility sport the nine individual winners were a more interest ¬ ing lot than usual Nu ¬ tonias Grace a four yearold pacing filly owned by the Norman C Towne Stock Farm Libertyville 111 for in ¬ stance went to the post as an evenmoney choice although the horse was making her seasonal bow Reports however had it that the Peter Nutonia daughter had been training in excellent style for trainer Dan Peacock and the race itself proved the ad ¬ vance publicity to be true Alas Dan Pea ¬ cock in his eagerness impeded the progress of the Dee Stoverdriven Guy Adam on the backstretch causing the colt to break stride and as a consequence of this in ¬ cident Peacock was suspended for five days from driving in races Nutonias Grace won her race easy enough and would have done so without the unfortunate col ¬ lision In any case Nutonias Grace low ¬ ered her record by almost two seconds be ¬ ing timed in 210 210The The second event of the night a C class trot was won by another favorite the sixyearold stallion Maige Me rac ¬ ing for the first time with ownertrainer Floyd Milton Hamburg N Y in the sulky Maige Me as many fans undoubt ¬ edly will remember raced as a pacer the last two seasons and was quite success ¬ ful on the lateral gait although original ¬ ly broken as a trotter Last winter his former owner H A Meyer Plymouth Wis had Maige Me switched back to the trot and in two starts at Santa Anita Maige Me finished in the money being narrowly beaten on both occasions In Thursday nights race Maige Me made a break leaving the gate but regained the lost ground easily and was not menaced once in the lead to win in 213 from Emma W Me driven by Don Busse who was Maige Mcs former pilot pilotEd Ed Casagranda is something of a minor sensation at this meeting Racing for the first time on the Chicago circuit the young man from Wisconsin is rapidly gaining recognition both as a trainer and a race driver In what was his sixth start at this meeting Ed guided his fourth winner an ¬ nexing the Kankakee Trot a 25 class early closing event with Doby Cash and reduc ¬ ing this performers record by six seconds to an acceptable 210 Don Busse another Wisconsin trainer was successful with the fiveyearold stallion Bernie Frisco a wellbred pacer with an impres ¬ sive array of fleet relatives such as Cap ¬ tain Cash 202 on a halfmile track Henry Mac with a record of 201 made at Santa Anita and the promising filly Dusty Cecil currently racing here under the care of Bob Parkinson Bernie Frisco for some reason or other did not race until four years old breaking his maiden in his very first start at Ponce De Leon Raceway Fla and after two more placings was laid off or the remainder of the 1953 season Don Busse expects great things from this pacer who should live up to his great speed inheritance his sire being Frisco Dale 200 from the good race mare Alou ette 3 207Vfe second dam Cecil Williams 4 2 06 Little Lou Rapone from Caledonia N Y in previous seasons raced ex ¬ t clusively on the New York circuit but never for one moment had to regret he came to Chicago this year Demonstrat ¬ ing good driving ability preferring to get the lead early in a race most of his seven victories at this meeting were scored in frontgoing style The most consistent member in Lous public stable is the fiveyearold pacer David B Worthy who won his third race at this meeting on Thursday night although having moved up in class Last year Lou was one of the nations leading reinsmen winning 89 races to tie with Castleton Farms trainer Wayne Curly Smart for fifth place in the national driver stand ¬ ings ingsThere There is hardly one night since Gene Riegle arrived here with his public stable that this gifted sulky pilot doesnt win a race On Thursday it was Nancy Lee Day a sixyearold trotting mare owned by G W Forsythe Dayton Ohio who carried Gene to the winners circle and it was a repeat win too the mare clipping over a second off her mark set on April 26 when clocked in 2081s Everybody agreed that Mighty Bob a fiveyearold son of Volpmite from the Guy Abbey mare Abbey Claire was a betterthanaverage per ¬ former when sound but unfortunately hoof trouble and a somewhat fiery temper often prevented this pacer from giving his best Jim Kealey who is the contract trainer for Hugh K Funderburg Belvidere HI but usually drives Mrs Henry Warren Jrs pacer in his races as a catch drive did his highreining best on Thursday night with Mighty Bob to win the River Forest Pace for 20 class pacers easily by over five lengths from Jerry Baiers Senator Tell and Adam Tass winner of his last four races in a creditable 208 speediest trip on Thursday night nightMaking Making his first start since winning the twoyearold division of the 50000 Illinois State Fair Colt Stake at Spring ¬ field last August threeyearold pacer John Sitzmann driven by Russell Briten field for owner O H Boner Taylor ville HI defeated a field of aged pacers in 211 for an auspicious beginning of his sophomore season The colt as you might know is probably the only stakes winner bred and owned by a groom for O H Boner is still with the Britenfield stable in just that capacity regarding the colts earnings of over 16000 as a nice nest egg when the time for retire ¬ ment comes Even if John Sitzmann wins the rich Springfield stake again this year his owner professes that the vic tory in itself would mean more to him himI I than the money
