PENTECOST A fine looking bay colt by Hastings Taran ¬ tula mads his appearance in public at Louis ville May 9 in a purse race in which eight other twoyearolds started and when the nine young ¬ sters flashed by the fateful judges stand this colt was an easy winner by a length and a half with Schorrs Fred Orgill second and Moores Golden Glitter third The winning colt was Brown Dicks Pentecost now well known to Chicago patrons of racing The distance was four and a half furlongs and the time was 571 seconds made over a heavy track Although it was Pentecosts first start he was an equal favorite with Gold on Glitter at post time at 8 to 5 each He got off in such fashion that his rider had to pull him out and take him around the field after which it was all over but the shouting The youngsters that he beat were no more than of the ubeful order bat there was something about Pentecosts appearance his way of going and the manner in which he won that made observers join in his owners enthu ¬ siastic opinion to the effect that Pentecost was destined to prove one of the stars of the good year 1901 He ran but this one race at the Louisville meeting and went to Latonia bear ¬ ing tho reputation of a sure enough crack At Latonia ho ran twice and scored a win each time May 13 ho started in a purse race at four and a half furlongs against Jaubert The Rival Hunter Raine Bud Embry Frank Me Axminster and Marcos and after running well back until the stretch turn was reached paesad easily into the lead and leaving the others rapidly won by three lengths in 551 sdo ouds with Jaubert second and The Rival third His reputation brought up from Lonisvillo had sufficed to make him a 1 to 3 favorite and he justified this extravagant favoritism in convinc ¬ ing fashion His other race at Latonia was for the Harold Stakes at five furlongs Tho race was over a slow track and only the owners of Andy Williams and Owenton had tho hardihood to send their youngsters to the post against him It was the same old story Pentecost took the lead early in tho race and retain inar it without being seriously challenged won out by himeolf two lengths before Andy Wil ¬ liams himself a proved good colt Time 1041 Pentecost was a 2 to 5 favorite Under tha cir ¬ cumstances and unbeaten threo times winner and with the reputation of being able to do much greater things than he had been called upon to display in public it is no wonder that his credentials wore viewed with great respect when he landed in Chicago prepared to do battle with the equino stare sure to congregate here He was saved for a Washington Park campaign where his career has hardly beea beeahat hat was anticipated anticipatedHis His first start here was on the day that Rob ¬ ert Waddell sprang into unexpected fame by winning the American Derby It was in a purse at four and onehalf furlongs with fourteen starters among them being the graud filly En ¬ durance by Right He carried 12S pounds to her 120 the others having imposts ranging from 118 pounds down to 108 Endurance by Right was an even money favorite and won by two lengths the fast filly Magi beating Pentecost two lengths for second money Pentecost footedit along with Endurance by Right in race horse fashion for part of the route but the high speed requisite caused him to tire Those who have enjoyed the pleasure of witnessing Endurance by Right run know that it is her fashion to produce the extreme of fatigue in the colts and fillies that essay keeping up with her so that on the whole Pentecosts experi OONTIMUBD OK BBOOND PA8B PENTECOST Continued from First Page ence was not unnenal and his showing was good The time was fast 51rj seconds secondsHis His next start June 28 was in a five and a half furlongs dash The field was AllanaDalo 111 Helen Print 10S Harry Wilson 108 Bragg 111 and Pentecost 118 AllanaDala won and Pentecost crossed his legs and fell so tho race counts for nothing so far as he is concerned He was running along easily in second place when the accident took place Jnly 2 ho ran eecond to Abo Frank for the Kenwood Stakes defeating Sir Oliver Horodiade and Janbert He carried 121 pounds to Abo Franks 125 and was baaton by two lengths The timo for tho five fnrlongs was 103 the track being heavy Ho swerved considerably under paniahmant and may not have fnlly recovered from the shock of his fall in his previous raco racoOn On the whole it must be said that Pentecost has hardly met expectations at Washington Park yet he has run well in all of bio races and may yet redeem himself by feats of speed and endurance up to the standard his shrewd and experienced trainer has believed him capa ¬ ble of
