Somerset was closing up well at the end and shows steady improvement. Miss Mitchell, evidently short, trailed under a choking pull for two miles and tired after moving up fast in the last half. Minotaur was lucky, had clear sailing throughout, saved ground by turning close to the rail and just lasted long enough after stealing a long lead on the stretch turn. Yardarm came out of close quarters in the last furlong and finished very fast, and was best. Joe Cobb went unexpectedly well at the weights and is evidently able to carry a good impost. Fort Wayne, crossed at the start and compelled to come around his field, failed to stay. Jack oLantern shows steady improvement. Lord Turco had not much chance at the start. He is a slow beginner and the big field bothered him. Connecticut, lucky and saving ground, appeared a sure winner in the last sixteenth and his rider was probably caught napping. Satire ran well and is evidently good again. Knight of Rhodes was probably short and tired in the last furlong. Plohn, a slow beginner and bumped and forced out of position repeatedly, was pocketed at the end. Demurrer quit badly. Graden is strictly a mudlark. Scratched 33447Dublin, 132; 33128 Choate, 110. Overweights Connecticut, 3 pounds. Cuspidor, show. 8 to 5. Connecticut, show, 8 to 5. Satire, show, 3 to 1. Whitechap-pel, on which Shaw rode a confident-looking race, finished strongly through the last quarter and won going away. Whorler was prominent throughout, held on unexpectedly well at the end and his race was a remarkable improvement. Mexican drew clear when straightened for the wire and seemed like winning, but weight tired him in the last furlong. River Pirate was closing up strongly at the end. Golden Maxim was poorly ridden. Waiting tactics with Mizzen proved disastrous. He was beaten early in the race and failed to stay when called on in the last quarter. Scratched 33258 Monte Carlo, 129; 333572Africander, 122. Won in a canter ; second handily. Major Daingerfield trailed the pacemakers for a mile and a quarter and after a mild drive to get up he came away in the stretch unextended and won easing up. He far outclassed the field and. is a genuine cup; horse. The Rival, which had made the pace for the first mile, was passed on the far turn by every horse but Slipthrift and apparently beaten, but came again unexpectedly at the end and was going very strongly. Goldsmith, which had trailed, came fast in the stretch and when apparently sure of second place at a furlong out, commenced to tire in the last fifty yards. Juvenalis waited on The Rival for a mile and then went to the front, going well in hand, but tired in the stretch and was a mighty good horse for a mile and a quarter. Kalif, an improved horse and always well up, came away fast right at the end after crowding Ascension. The latter made her run too early, but hung on very gamely at the end in spite of excessive use in the first part of the race. Cornwall was a wild horse for the first half and failed to stay. The Amazon quit as, usual at the end. Alack closed up much ground. Jack Demund is evidently a sulker. Rossignol retired, early.
