NORTHEBN HANDICAP STARTERS. The horses that have accepted weights in the Northern Handicap, which will be contested at Hawthorne today, give the stake the aspect of a renewal of the Wheeler and Young Handicaps run at Washington Park. The prospective field is almost identical with those which went to the post in the big all-aged event at the south side course. It includes Argregor, winner of the Young Handicap, Scarlet Lily, the runner-up in that race, John Bright, which won the Harlem Handicap in sensational fashion, running the first mile of the race in 1:39s, McChesney, considered the best three-year-old in the west, Flying Torpedo, winner of the Wheeler Handicap and the Midway Stakes, Hunter Raine, Haviland, laddin and Scintillant II. McChesney, whose last race showed him to be in rare form, is asked to carry top weight, 114 pounds, a liberal concession on the scale to Argregor, John Bright and the others. The race should show what he might have done in the American Derby. The distance is one and one-quarter miles and, with ,000 added, the stake will have a gross value of close to ,000.
