Payne, evidently a coming crackerjack received a lucky start, hart picked for him throughout the best going on the 1 outside, finished gamely and will beat good ones. Forward raced in the worst going from start to fin- . ish and that beat him. Counterpoise, more than useful, ran a fast and game race and was also anchored in the deep going at the end. Hymettus forced the pace, made a wide stretch turn and finished fast. 1 Fullback closed a big gap. Erbe is a fine looker but lacked in condition. Winner B. g, by Rayon dOr Astoria trained by A. Shields. Went to post at 2:45. At post 1 minute. Start bad. Won handily ; second the same. Zoroaster was skillfully reserved to th far turn and made good with a brilliant stretch run. The Rival raced in bad going for seven furlongs and was crowded back, but came on the outside in the stretch and finished with a rush. As weighted he was best and the improvement in his running was probably due to blinkers. Himself tired badly in the last furlong. Daly moved up fast on the far turn, but quit unexpectedly in the stretch. Par Excellence ran an honest, consistent race, but was unable to concede the weight. Ethics had no chance in the slow, sticky going and was always outrun. Scratched 3436201d Hutch, 100; 344l42Baron Pepper, 100; 34316 Barouche, 87. Zoroaster, show, 1 to 5. The Rival show, 4 to 5.
