GOSSIP OF THE TURF. James Clare, for twenty-five years superintendent of the Brighton Beach track, .died at 10 oclock .Monday night. He had a carbuncle cut recently and blood poisoning, which set in, caused his death. He was 54 years old and leaves a widow, three sons and a danghier. Mr. Clare was born at the old Jerome, Park racetrack, of which he was superintendent for years. He was a brother-in-law of John J. Hyland, the trainer for August Belmont, and was one of the best known and most popular men on the turf. J. B. Haggin has decided not to sell his entire racing stable, after all. The sale had been fixed for Friday, but Mr. Haggin had it announced Tuesday that he had changed his mind. Instead of selling out the millionaire turfman has engaged Jack Joyner to train for him in future and will turn his stable over to him immediately. Joyner signed to train for Sydney Paget some time ago, and his engagement by Mr. Haggin confirms the story that Mr. Paget and Mr. Haggin have formed some sort of a racing partnership. John A. Drakes Savable, winner of the Futurity, will not race again this year. Trainer Enoch Wish-ard arrived at this conclusion several days ago. Savable developed lameness after finishing in front in the big 0,000 stake and has not been able to indnlge in hard work since. It was for this reason that Drake decided that it would bo unwise to start Savable in a special sweepstakes for two-year-olds in which he would probably have met Whitney and Duryeas Irish Lad and Acofull. Savable will be sent to Lexington, Ky;, together with a carload of yearlings owned by Drake, the yearlings to be broken by the noted Dan OBrien. Savables lameness is not deemed serious, being due to a slight wrench and Drako says ho will win next years American Derby.
