TWO DERBY CANDIDATES WIN AT CITY PARK. Monterey a Good Colt In the Mud Drugging of Grenade Is Under Investigation. New Orleans, La., March 2. The performances of two promising Derby colts. Tambean and Monterey, were features of some good racing at City Park" this afternoon, although with a heavy track, speculators found It a difficult matter to locate the winners in some of the races. Tambeau was considered last summer to lie one of the best of the second division of youngsters that ran in the east. In the fall he went slightly wrong and has only latterly been rounding .to. Todays effort was his first this winter. The colt was a well backed second choice at 1." to 5. While he ran gamely, racing the pacemaker, Nonle Lucille into subjection In the stretch and winning by a half length, he did not perform as well as had been expected of him. No doubt he will improve between now and the running of the Derby in which event he. Is certain to be a factor. Ever since the City Park winter meeting began Albert Simons has contended that his Monterey would be a hard horse to beat in the Derby should the track be heavy when the race is decided. Monterey demonstrated his mud qualities in the handicap "at live and one.-half furlongs, in which he was heavily backed from S to.l to ,1 to 1. He waited on the early pace to the final furlong and then drew nwnv winning easily from Polly Prim. As Monterey carried 110 pounds, the running at once brings him Into prominence as a Derby factor. Tom Murray showed up what looks like a high class colt this morning in a two-year-old full brother to Orbicular. With a good sized lad in the saddle,, this youngster worked five furlongs in l".0Qj. He is a great looker and has extreme speed. Murray claims that he is the fastest two-year-old on the grounds. Eight horses the property of R. H. McC. Potter, will be shipped by boat to New York. They leave tomorrow morning on the Morgan line of steamers. V. Z. De Arman purchased of Green Morris this morning the three-year-old Rama. Judges Trevelyan and Murphy had a busy time of it this afternoon at City Park Investigating the dragging of the horse Grenade. They had before them about ten men and are still on the hunt, for several others. The case Is a nasty one as it Involves besides" a couple of owners a well known book-maker. The matter will be sifted to the bottom. The officials are determined to find the guilty parties. It may be that a decision in the case will be handed out tomorrow. The liorse has responded to treatment and is improving. It Is said that the drug administered was chloral and that is was given in Jis raw state without being diluted. The supposition is that it was given as a drench and this accounted for the horses mouth and tongue being burned.
