SHIELDS WINS A FORTUNE ON AL POWELL. Derby Horses In Action Only Two Favorites Beaten At Crescent Park Gossip. New Orleans, La., March 12. Large fields went to the post in a majority of the races at City Park this afternoon and picking winners proved no easy task. Three of the races went to the favorites, but some well backed horses were defeated. In the closing race the Corrigan filly Begonia, backed from I. to 1 to 11 to 5, managed to stagger in third, while Colonel White, backed by his stable for a good thing in the sixth race, failed to finish inside the money. The track was in good condition although a bit dead. Jockey Swain, who has been riding at Los Angeles all winter, arrived here last night. He will ride at City Park for the remainder of the meeting. John Maylerry will make his engagements. The stables of J. Gas.s and Co., W. O. .Toplin and Co. and P. M. drill, were shipped to Louisville this afternoon and will lie rested up at Churchill Downs until the opening of "the spring meeting there. .!. II. McCormiek and several eastern owners ship to New York some day this week. Colonel Henry Venni, one of the directors of the Louisville Jockey Club arrived here this morning and will stop over to see the City Park Derby run. Jockey D. AVishard has signed to ride for James R. Keene during the coining season. The deal was consummated through James II. McCormiek. Karama, one of the best of George Holies two-year-olds, is still at City Park. The colt was cut down in his last start at the new track and when the Holle stable was transferred to the old track, was left over. Lucius" Fatty Phillips, who has been liooking all winter at the old track, cut in at City Park this afternoon. In all twenty-one books were on. Jockey Mclntyre, who had the mount on Follow the Flag in the seventh race, was suspended for one week for rough riding. He interfered witli Trenola, forcing the latter to cross over in front of Begonia. Monterey, a City Park Derby candidate, worked a mile and a quarter yesterday in 2:14J. The "dogs" were up and the colt was in the middle of the track all the way. Jack Dolan and Tambeau were worked a mile and a furlong together in. .2:14. Two of the six favorites at Crescent Park were beaten today Disobedient and Judge Davey. The latter lost through accident. He was sharply cut off just after the start and before he could regain his stride, he was struck by three or four horses and when Livingston got hhn going, he was eight lengths or so out of it. Then he went on and finished fourth, running past horses at the end. Disobedient was beaten lecause he was outrun all the way. He was closing up gamely enough at the end, but could not- get up. He was favorite in an exceptionally good field. Rapid Water, which made the most of the running, tired a bit at the end. Goldsmith was cut off just after the start, but for which he would almost certainly hare won. Dlsolte-dients race was something of a disappointment and his Derby chances are less highly regarded than they were after his first race. Harvey T. Woodruff, secretary of the Western Jockey Club, was a visitor at the old track today. He said there was no importance to be attached to his trip here, as it was merely a vacation. Willie Shields and Ids party won heavily over the victory of Ai Powell in the second race. The bulk of the money was bet away from here at opening odds of 10 to 1. It is said that at least 0,000 was taken out of New York and Chicago.
