; . i , : STATE OFFICERS STOP BETTING AT SALEM. No Odds Are Displayed or Bets Made After the Third Race at Rockingham Park. Salem, N. n., June 29. County Solicitor Batch-elder, of Portsmouth, accompanied by Deputy Sheriff Weslev Adams, of West Derry, made their appearance at Rockingham Park today just at the time the third race was being run. They Immediately sought out Andrew Miller, president of the New England Breeders Clib under whose auspices the meeting is being conducted, and served him with court orders ealling on him to stop all betting at the track. A hurried conference was held between Mr. Miller, several directors and Robert PInkertons representative, with the result that the latter was ordered to stop instantly any belting going on on the clubs premises. The bookmakers who had been hand-booking on the lawn in front of the stand dispersed and after that there was no display of odds in any quarter of the grounds and apparently no betting. This action on the part of the state authorities signifies that there will be no more betting of any kind at Rockingham. Therefore the meeting will be conducted without this feature. The fourth race today was spoiled by the withdrawal of Lllita, Pulque and Tipping, leaving only Xienap, Aviston and Miss Hawley as starters. Zle-nap, well rated by Johnny Daly, went to the front on the far turn and in a long stretch drive beat out Miss Hawley by a half length. The weather was pleasant and the track fast. A fair sized crowd was in attendance.
