HEAVY WIND AND RAINSTORM AT LATONIA. Crowd Becomes Panicky for a Brief Period Track Muddy After Third Race Nicols -Day. Cincinnati, O., July 3. A windstorm, almost cyclonic in velocity, came up suddenly after the third race at Latonia this afternoon, threw the crowd into a panic and sent the people scurrying from the grandstand and letting shed to the lawn. The wind died down as suddenly as it had come and a heavy rain sent the crowd rushing back into the stand for shelter. No one was injured. The rain left the track muddy and caused a hasty shifting of odds on the horses entered for the fourth race, for, when betting began on the handicap, the track was fast. John Carroll had opened at 3 to 5, but the dampness put ids price to SI to 1 at post time. Ralberts odds on the other hand were cut from 20 to 1 to 2J to 1. The price alout Colonel Jim Douglas also took a sudden drop, he going to the post at 3 to 1. from an opening of 10 to 1. Tom Roberts, which opened at 10, went to the post with 100 to 1 quoted about Ids chances. Several owners, including Mr. Corrigan, sent word to the judges that thier horses had no liking for the going and that no censure could be attached to them if the horses ran disappointingly. Miltiadcs, ridden today by Treubel, showed- improved form and led the others for the entire trip, winning well in hand from Cottontown with the fast coming Fortunate In third place. It was strictly Nicols day. This skillful rider piloted four of ids mounts to victory and his followers reaped a harvest. J. S. Bratton will dispose of by auction Friday next all the old horses he has here in training. He will bring down from St. Louis fourteen two-year-olds, which will be raced here. William Gcrst has purchased from Edward Corrigan three yearlings. Catharine Condon, a promising two-year-old, owned by I. J. Millett. broke her hip while lieiug worked and will probably be destroyed.
