FOUL IN MOHAWK STAKES. DISOBEDIENT IS DIS QUALIFIED FOE INTERFERENCE WITH HIS TWO OPPONENTS. Puritan Girl Is Practically Xeft in Eace Won by tho Heavily Backed Clara Huron and Scandalous Talk Follows. Saratoga, N. Y., August 7. Ideal weather conditions attended the Saratoga Associations second day of racing, notwithstanding that the card was markedly mediocre and lacking in important stake fixtures. Another large throng of wonderfully well dressed men and women graced the occasion, fully 12,000 icople enjoying an afternoons outing at this exquisite racecourse. The Mohawk Soiling Stakes at a mile and an eighth attracted only three starters of present doubtful class. Disobedient, a light of other days, which lias deteriorated to such an extent that he could not now eoic successfully with selling platers, was first at the end of the journey, hut was disqualified. lie came near putting his two opponents, McKittredge and Yazd, over the fence on the first turn by Ids boring in tactics. darners dismal exhibition on the degenerate half brother to the great McOhesney, as well as his half hearted endeaTor on Neptunus, the Drake favorite in his preceding race, evoked plenty of adverse comment from the spectators. The Drake jockey disdained to make a complaint in the stake. This was left to the rider of Yazd. August Belmonts Don Enrique, a half brother to Beldame, partially redeemed himself for his series of recent failures by winning the opening race for two-year-olds. Interest in the race was greatly enhanced by the presence of the heralded world beater. Sir William Johnson, a full brother to Chuctanunda. the champion sprinter of his time. The blue blooded Sanford youngster acted green as grass In his preliminary where lie was with difficulty restrained from bolting the course. Kxperts pronounced him only a pocket edition of his distinguished relative and unlikely to follow in his footsteps. The third race, for maiden two-year-olds was attended with several sensational features. Puritan Girl, from the Whitney establishment, was a heavily backed favorite. The halt sistt;r to Claude carried more money lhan any horse that has started at this meeting. The- race was considered an absolute certainty for her and when she was left at the post a scene of unusual excitement followed. The protests from the occupants of the clubhouse were loud and long, many declared that the assistant starter had held the favorite at the post. Koerner. in the presence of trainer Rogers denied this, but said that she was backing and not ready for the break. The jockeys subsequent behavior in not urging his mount to contest started a lot of scandal-oiis gossip, intensified by the knowledge that L. A. Cella had won an enormous wager on Clara Huron, backed down with extraordinary confidence from as good as 20 to 1 to S to 1. William Shields won 2,000 on his fast three-year-old Bon Hoddcr, which won the mile handicap with ease. Horsemen generally evinced much interest in the performance of The Commoner colt. lie Is reported to have been tried marvelously fast In his recent work. Old. Faithful, the second choice, was unable to raise a respectable gallop. Athlete met defeat in his first start this year, finishing behind Firebrand in the last race, at six furlongs. As a two-year-old. the Athelihg colt ran second to the mighty Mohawk II. and was seriously considered as a Futurity factor. He has not trained on as expected. Judging by todays poor performance. His stalile connections backed him to the limit and with confidence. Secretary Earlockor made an unsuccessful endeavor to get up a special race at a mile for three-year-olds to be run ou Thursday. Despite the valuable purse Inducements offered by the association, the proffered race failed to filly, only Mohawk II. being entered. Horace E. worked a half mile this morning In 47J. pulling up. Horace E. is expected to make his first eastern nppcarancc in a purse race next Friday. He will prove the biggest kijid of an attraction. The Sanford filly Neoskaleeta ran awav three furlongs at full speed with Miller on her back while on the way to the post in the third race. Miller lias yet to score his first success at this meeting. Koyal Window pulled up lame after his race today. McKittredge ran without his customary blinkers in the stake. Hildebrand won his first race of the season on the big metropolitan tracks with Firebrand in the sixth, displaying all of his old time skill in the saddle.
