Wee Lass Wins Handicap El-advised Plunge on Coruscate How Hubbards Connections Man-oeuvered for a Price and Got it. Cincinnati, 0., August 14. A heavy rain fall dor-. Ing the morning rendered the Latonia track muddy and a good card of six races was somewhat marred by withdrawals. All of the five named to go in the handicap accepted the issue and the race was a lively betting affair, Wee Lass enjoying favoritism. There was an unacconntable plunge on Coruscate. This mare has never shown a liking for mud and some of her alleged inconsistent races last year were excused on "that ground. The betting fraternity seemed to have overlooked this fact, for after her price had receded to 6 to 1, she was backed so industriously that she went to the post at half that price. She ran, Jn, keeping with her previous form in heavy going. She was outpaced at all stages of the journey and was never a serious contender in the race. Wee Lass rushed Into the lead right after the start and remained there, winning as her rider pleased by five lengths. Nonle Lucille was second all the way. Devout made strenuous efforts to get up in the stretch, but she held him safe. The time, 1:301 for the seven furlongs was fast, considering the condition of the track. Sharp practice on the part of Hubbards connections enabled them to get a big price against their candidate. It was industriously circulated that the horse waB on the verge of a breakdown, and many taking this for granted, began to plunge on Swlft-wlng and Imboden, with the result that the odds about Hubbard rose from 3 to 5 to 9 to 5. Then the-right money was. poured, into the ring and the price forced down to evens at post time. Hubbard won as NIcol pleased. J. B.
