LILLIAN RUSSELLS PLANS CAUSE TALK. While experienced turfmen doubt the probability of Lillian Russells reported purchase of Australian rq,cehorses and the published announcement that she intends to race In this country In the name of "Mr. Clinton," Miss Russell herself, at her cottage in Saratoga a day or two ago, said that an Australian turfmen who knew her had interested her in the turf performances of the product of the best horses of that country and had made an offer to sell her some horses, which she had taken under consideration. Concerning that part of the report which speaks of the product of Carbine, well-posted horsemen know that Carbine was purchased by the Duke of Portland seven years ago and has been in England ever since. Spearmint, which won this years English Derby and the "French Grand Prix, Is a son of Carbine. Mrs. Langtry, who some years ago won a fortune on Australian racehorses Imported by her into England, is now racing the produce of those horses. Turfmen at Saratoga think It not improbable that Miss Russell may formally become a horse owner. She Is a daily attendant of the races- there, as well as in New York; is an assidtious student of the charts, and wagers upon her own selections, notwithstanding that she has the benefit of the advice of shrewd followers of the turf.
