SANFORDS VIEW OF REFORMERS. Blair Painter, one of the owners of the Newcastle Stable, gave a clam bake at Saratoga Sunday afternoon. All of the Important stables were represented by the owners or trainers. After the dinner, John Sanford, who is a member of the New York State Racing Commission, made a short address In which he paid his compliments to the professional reformers who oppose racing, the pleasure and pastime of millions of folk. He said they recalled to him Macaulays definition of Puritans, who he said were people who sought to stop bull-baiting, not because of the cruelty to the animals, but because It gave joy to the onlookers.
