BETTING IN MASSACHUSETTS. The efforts of District Chief George C. Noal of the Massachusetts State police to suppress betting nt the Grand Circuit trotting meeting at Readville last week, proved unavailing. Maurice N. Welch and others were charged with registering bets. Their cases came up lie fore Judge Harrison A. Plympton of the Dedham District Court, who dismissed the defendants and announced his decision as follows: "I find that there is no conflict between sections 30 and 17 of chapter 214 of the Revised Laws. I hold that the registering of bets is an individual offense as Is poolselling. I hold, however, that betting connected with a corporation as in the present instance, will be allowed. The question now comes whether this is a mere bet or the registration of a bet. Tills present case is not a registering of-bets. The tickets presented in evidence are inere memoranda. Therefore there lias been no registration of bets, and I find each defendant not guilty."
